Hi everyone!
I have installed Red Hat Enterprise Linux Server 5.1
on my system and my sound card has been successfully detected as well
(i.e. ESS Allegro 1988). However, I am unable to play any audio file
on my system. Can anyone please provide me with a solution? Thanks.
Best,
Arpan. |

Arpan,
Does the soundcard detection tool test sound play correctly or not?
Kind regards,

Do some sound app appear to be doing something using top? Does it stop doing
it when the sound should stop on its own? I mean does a 30 second sound make a
sound playing app appear and then disappear from the top screen.
If so it sounds like a problem I have had off and on over the years with
Redhat. The solution is to find a few apps that control volume and/or mute and
fix the problem with each of them. The first one I find does not always work.
I have never kept records so I do not know if the same one always works.

Jan,
Even the soundcard detection tool doesn't work, although it
correctly identifies the sound card.

I had posted a question on linux.redhat group on

and had also received a response from your side to the same. I had
given further details about my system on the same post, and was
expecting to receive the solution to my problem. However, even after
doing so, I did not receive even a single response from anyone for
solving the problem. As a result, I had no option but to contact you
personally for addressing the issue. So, if you can provide me with a
solution, I would be very grateful to you. Looking forward to your reply.
Thanking you.

Dear Arpan,
Asking for more information means that one tries to enlargen the group
of possible helpers.
I am sorry that no one could help you until now.
I am a system administrator on servers, not on PC's. So I can only help
you based on personal experience. I did not have sound problems on RHEL
5.1 and use RHEL 5.3 right now.
Did you try running system-config-soundcard from a terminal? Might give
you an error message that might be picked up in the newsgroup.
Kind regards,
Jan Gerrit Kootstra |
