KDE 4.3 was released today, yet gentoo doesn't even have kde 4.2 on
the standard portage repositories. What gives?
I tried 4.1 and wasn't too terribly impressed. Why are the gentoo
ebuilds lagging so far behind? |

I can't speak for the Gentoo developers, but from what I hear in other
newsgroups, KDE 4.x is still not quite stable - it consumes a lot of
resources and Plasma often seems to crash - and still lacks lots of the
features of KDE 3.5.
Therefore, I can understand that the Gentoo developers /might/ be
considering it "not to be ready for prime time yet".
All of the above is of course under the assumption that you are speaking
of the stable Portage repositories, not of the /~arch/
repositories. ;-)

I think the "wasn't too terribly impressed" part has a lot to do with why
more than one distro is reluctant to go for the latest and greatest KDE.
With some of the most requested features being scheduled for 4.5, I
understand the fence sitting.

Hm... That might explain why I see 4.1 versions when I do an 'emerge
--search' (eix actually).
I had the ~arch keywords in my /etc/portage/package.keywords file last
time I evaluated kde4. I guess it really was 4.2 I evaluated and
wiped because it wasn't ready yet (stuff like no bluetooth support)...
KDE 3.x went through the same thing. It was quite useable by 3.3. |

Visiting the Gentoo-KDE channel at freenode gave the impression that there are
issues with packages, which makes that we don't have a later version in the
portage, but you can always use layman to add the kde overlay if you want test
latest kde4 ebuilds. There is issues to use the kdeprefix option and if you
install kde4 without it, you can't use kde3 and you may have issues after you
uninstalled kde4.

I tried 4.2.2 and 4.2.3 and I have to say it was far from what I had expected,
nowhere near the number of features in kde3.5, no support for multiple X (not
talking about twinview), and instead of taking honor to system wide settings,
kde4 overrides and sets settings that they think you should use instead.
Just keep on using kde3 and wait for kde5, maybe then they have learned to
listen to the users needs instead of the stupid copy OSX ideas from the
kubuntu crew and make useful features instead of stupid effects like snow.

Maybe you need to --sync? I'm in the process of installing 4.3.0 from
portage now....

I've gone through the drill before. I made a backup of my .kde user directories
and didn't lose a thing when I reverted. Didn't lose any email either because
I didn't set up kde4's kmail to delete email off the server.
Just before starting this thread, I went to check what was available and
was surprised to see kde 4.1x. It made me think that kde 4.2 had never
been made available.
Actually, kde 4.2 has been around for a while and that was what I evaluated;
kde 4.2 showed up when I added the ~arch lines to my package.keywords file.
I'll give kde 4.3 a try as soon as packages are unmasked. I think it may be
ready for prime time. KDE 3.x was the same; 3.0 had very little that worked
and it was 3.3 that was the first useable release IIRC. Or maybe it'll be 4.4
that's the first useable release.
I sure am not going to wait for 5.0. It'll be the same horror that occures
with every .0 release. |

that's the first useable release.
KDE 3.1 was quite useful (was the first version of KDE I used, before that I
used gnome, but as it was discontinued and gnome2 was going completely the
wrong direction IMHO, so there wasn't much option for a full DE). KDE3.2 was a
huge speedup compared with 3.1, I wouldn't even compare KDE4.2 with KDE3.1
when it comes to usefulness.

Surely it will not be a final stable version like KDE3.5, but I think they may
have lost all of the stupidity by then.
