Please note that on or around July 15, 2009, AT&T will no longer be
offering access to the Usenet netnews service. If you wish to continue
reading Usenet newsgroups, access is available through third-party
vendors.

Posted only internally to AT&T Usenet Servers.

Globally visible, I think. And inappropriately multiposted (should have been
fewer copies, each one reasonably widely crossposted).

I wonder if sbcglobal.discard (as opposed to .disgard) was meant?

General cluelessness in the tech support of Usenet is probably one
reason SBC/ATT is dropping Usenet. On the (genuinely exclusive) SBC
groups, there's been limited conjecture that the typo in the one group
name means the message is a hoax. Meanwhile Bleachbot is blasting it
from existence wherever it can, since it's been posted to *every* group
the old Prodigy servers carry, not just sbcglobal.*. It's probably
legit, though.

Someone in another group speculated that AT&T made an intentional typo,
on the thinking that many nntp servers will drop posts cross-posted to a
nonexistent group. But a) not all will, and b) there are better ways of
restricting the distribution of a post, especially if, like AT&T, you
have full control over the nntp servers where the post originates.

So, that begs the question of whether they're being intentionally
incompetent in posting their message, to justify shutting it down in the
name of inadequate support. ;-/

I, too, suspect it's legitimate:

http://my.att.net/newsgroup/s/s.dll

A mixed blessing for AT&T customers, perhaps? Now they can get a decent
nntp feed, or possibly even a decent ISP, instead of AT&T.

There's been quite a bit of talk over in NANAE about AT&T and several
other consumer ISPs in the USA dropping NNTP. I think it's legit, and
also a vivid demonstration of why it's a good idea that AT&T is getting
out of NNTP service...
