hi guys,
for years, I have always used asus mobo and amd chips with ubuntu and have
never had any problems at all. for some stupid reason, it sounded like a
good idea to upgrade to a quad processor, and go with intel, mainly because
it sounded to be faster the amd counter part. anyway, I have got a gigabyte
p45-ds3l mobo now with four gigi of ram and a q6600 chip. two sata hard
drives and a sata dual layer dvd rom. when i try and install ubuntu hardy
8.4 64 bit I go thru the original screen where you say you want to install,
then nothing happens for a minute or two and then this message pops up "
BusyBox v 1.1.3 (debian 1:1.1.3-5ubuntu12) Built-in shell (ash)...."
when I try to install the 32 bit version, it just reboots as soon as I
select I want to install ubuntu.
I have tried with the bios I got form the box and an updated bios. the disks
are all recognised in the bios,I have installed and uninstalled them many
times. I thought maybe it was a bad disto disk so I have burnt multiple
copies and they work in another pc.
please help me, I am staranded on my 30 gig windows partition on this
machine ( windows vista installed without any trouble). It has only been
like 12 hours but I am having withdrawl symptoms, I can not stand windows. i
am seriously thinking of going back to the shops and buying another mobo and
amd chip.
I will really appreciate your help |

I think the problem is the SATA DVD burner. If you can get an IDE
burner and use it to install, I think that will solve your problem.
I had the same problem trying to install from SATA burner.
Hope this helps

Seems like you aren't the only one to try to install ubuntu on a such machine.
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=878204
The problem is that the SATA driver don't seem to support your motherboards
Chipset, it's most likely fixed in a newer kernel, but not on the kernel
shipped on the ubuntu CD you have.
Some boards (like my Asus Crossfire II) do have a bios setting which allows
you to change the SATA more, see if you have a BIOS setting which you can set
AHCI, that way you will be able to use the SATA with older kernels (at least
in my case).
If you can't, I suggest you take a proper Linux distribution that supplys you
a newer kernel on the install media, a good place to look for such information
is www.distrowatch.com.

Have you tried adding some boot options, before stating the install.
Maybe play with combinations of "noapic nolapic pci=nacpi vga=normal"
That was the magic needed to get my asus mobo to install with the ubuntu
7.10 cd.
Do you know how to add those before the cd starts the install? I might
be F6, I don't remember.
Let me know if that works to get the install rolling. In that case your
installed version will probably freeze without having it's boot options
modified.

OR you could get away from Ubuntu to another distro. I have had nothing but
problmes with Ubuntu based distros (I have a friend who swears by them as
much as I swear at them). I have found that PClinuxOS will boot a Sata
driver with no problems. But for my money either try the latest Mandriva
2009 or PCLinuxOS MiniMe, which I much prefer to the PCLinusOS 2007. The
thing I like about the Mini_Me is that it is only about 284meg, leaving you
to hit the repository for those apps you want and need, rather than getting
a bunch of stuff you neither want or need.
