I have an older HP Presario (500MHz) that runs Win98 and WinXP fine.
Wanted to install Ubuntu Linux, but the system will not boot from the CD.
The BIOS is from 1999, and an update cannot be found. Have tried another
CD drive to no avail. Anyone know how to get the install process going
without booting up the CD?

Hope you already found a solution but I just joined the list so I'll

volunteer a couple suggestions.

Usually there is a way to boot from floppy if you can't boot from CD but
one easy one is at http://btmgr.webframe.org/ . I've never used it but I'm
told it is free and easy to use.

If floppy doesn't work for you there is such a thing as network booting
that might be an option. If you need that option let me know and I can
give you some tips that make it fairly easy.

You should be able to change your boot order in bios to make the cd-rom
the first bootable drive. Not sure what your bios looks like but this
should be the best option.

This sounds crazy enough to work, so give it a try...
1)burn the Ubuntu install onto a CD
2)If you're going to use a brand new HD, format it under Win98
3)Boot your PC with a win98 boot disk, with CD support.
Then copy the contents of the Ubuntu CD to C:\ and see it it will
reboot using the Linux image and install itself
