If I wish to use the IP blocking feature of
Smoothwall 2.0 to block an entire group of
addresses what do I have to enter as the
source IP address?

For example if I wanted to block every attempt
from 211.34.123.0 thru to 211.34.123.255 surely
I don't need to enter 256 separate addresses as
source IP's?

Regards,
Andy Jenkins.

But what do I enter in the Source IP box (in the IP Block Page) to
allow this. As I understand it from the docs; entering
211.34.123.0/24 will match the first 24 bits of any address (class C)
and 211.34.123.0/16 will match up with anything with the same
first 16 bits (class B). I want to block someone who is spamming my
guestbooks and using very varying addresses. I really need to match
the first 8 bits only but I'm not sure if putting a /8 at the end is
working properly. I don't want to block three-quarters of the
internet from accessing my web-server.

Thanks RR. I did find something in Smoothwalls docs refering
to the /8 etc. on the end. A little searching with Google
soon explained what it did.

Andy.
