Last night, Irma Verhoeff
{{http://www.sherdog.com/fightfinder/fightfinder.asp?fighterid=556}} (wife
of Bob
Schreiber{{http://www.sherdog.com/fightfinder/fightfinder.asp?fighterID=310}})
fought the worlds first MMA fight mixed-gender fight. Her opponent was Mark
Gefferies, 22lbs (=10kgs) lighter, which was the only stipulation.
The fight ended in a draw. Mark was much stronger at standup, but as
expected, Irma was about his equal on the ground. It was actually an
interesting bout, I did get the feeling that Mark was pulling his punches
and kicks sometimes but it certainly was not fixed. Also, mark was not a
total beginner, and Irma was clearly getting hit during standup. I did feel
that al things considered, had Irma been a man, decision should have gone to
Mark, but it was not a one-sided fight, and Irma demonstrated that a
technically capable woman can put up a real fight against a trained male
fighter, albeit in this case a somewhat lighter one. Irma could surely take
out an unsuspecting heavier man easily.
Congratulations to Irma and Team Schreiber for a good performance and good
show.
