European champion Greece rises to best ever eighth in FIFA rankings

ZURICH, Switzerland - European champion Greece has risen to eighth in the
FIFA world soccer rankings, its highest ever position.
With Argentina still at No. 1 in an unchanged top seven, Greece rose two
places in the list released Wednesday after beating Portugal last month 2-1
in an exhibition.
The game was a rematch of the 2004 European Championship final, in which
Greece surprisingly beat the hosts 1-0.
With Brazil, Italy, Spain, Germany, Czech Republic and France filling out
the rest of the top seven spots, Portugal dropped a place to ninth and the
Netherlands slipped a spot to 10th.
Canada fell one place to No. 63.
Israel reached the top 20 for the first time, rising two places to 20th
thanks to a 1-0 exhibition match victory over Chile.
Moldova was the biggest mover in the top 50 with a 14-place rise to No. 37
while the United States moved up seven places to No. 21 after a 3-0
exhibition win at Poland.
Ghana remained Africa's highest ranked team in No. 14, with Mexico two spots
back as CONCACAF's best side. |
