In the shop where they're fixing my Vespacar there's a mid-90's
Vulcan 1500, somewhat rusty and run-down looking. It has a broken
gear shifter. The owner lives up the coast and uses it year round,
rain or shine.

To fix it the shop is going to have to tear the whole motor apart
and crack the crankcase. Their shop labor rate is $100/hour.

The wrench didn't mention a figure, but said it would take a lot
of hours. If it takes anywhere near 30, the owner would be better off
spending his money on this:

After that he could even recover some more by parting out his
old bike.

I had a 1988 VN1500. It leaked oil from the valve covers. The shop
told me, "they all do that." I went to Americade and talked to the
national rep. He said, "they all do that." He also told me they
would have to pull the motor to fix it.

I sold it and bought a Harley. When it leaked oil, the dealer said,
"is shouldn't do that." He fixed it for free.

I haven't bought another Kawasaki.

Typical White Asshole

However, the phrase "they all do that" is used frequently by many HD
dealers on much subject matter. Stop into any HD forum and ask, if you
care to test that.

To be on topic, I always respect a mechanic and a dealer that might
point out that the cost to fix might exceed the value of the unit in
question.
