In Bakerville OH, a 165lb black bear was shot the property owner after it
charged him. A normal end to a black bear that has become excessively
fond of human surroundings, but in Ohio he was charged with a misdemeanor
offense of "shooting an endangered animal". That carries a $1000 fine and
a year in the slammer.

Is Ohio nuts? I have to wonder about a state that elects Kucinich.
Black bears aren't endangered, and (as long as they've been eating berries
instead of dead fish) they are food animals.

Democracy is two wolves and a sheep deciding what to eat for lunch.
Liberty is a well-armed sheep contesting the vote.

Where I live, in the mountains of western Virginia (as contrasted to the
"state of West Virginia", which is on the other side of the mountain
tops), the archery season runs for a month, then a month of firearms
season. Black bears are thick around here, I see them regularly and last
year had some problem bears wandering through my back yard. I've had 4
incidents of bears raiding the trash barrels in the National Forest
which I empty as a volunteer with the US Forest Service, in the last two
months. I think the soft mast crop (berries, etc) is poor this year, due
to dry weather.
