We came home today and found a young hummingbird in distress (114
degrees today) on the window ledge in our courtyard. We had seen a
larger hummingbird in the courtyard for the last few days and just
bought a feeder.
I approached the little hummingbird, took him in my hand, and brought him
into the house. He stayed in my hand, while the wife made some syrup for
the feeder, and I fed the little guy with drips off my finger. After
about a half hour, I tried getting him to fly, but about 10 feet is it.
He is content to have me pick him up and bring him in, where it is cool.
He is alert, and not afraid. He perches on my finger. His mom buzzes the
courtyard looking in our windows, so I put him on a piece of cloth on
top of a step ladder in the courtyard at dark. He is content to sit and
look around, and I think the mom is watching. I'm going to check often
to see that he doesn't fly down to the ground. He should be strong
enough in the AM to fly home. These hummingbirds are smarter than people
think they are.

We checked on the bird each hour through the windows after dark until
midnight, using a small flashlight. After being on his cloth on the
stepladder for an hour or so, the little guy tucked his head under his
wing and slept through the night. My wife was up at 5 a.m. to check, and
the bird was still snoring. At 5:45 a.m. she woke me up and showed me
that the bird was awake and looking around. The mother bird came by and
checked on the little one, and touched beaks a couple times in her
trips. She hovered in front of the windows and looked in on us. When she
flitted off, I went out and dripped a little red nectar from my finger
to the little one's beak, and mom bird came back and chirped behind me.
I went inside, and after a few minutes, the little guy tried his wings,
then stood up, tried a little harder and flew to the roof and sat a few
seconds. Then he buzzed harder, and flew away. We set a hummingbird
feeder in the courtyard.
My wife and I are pretty happy.

I applaud your efforts to save the hummer but please DON'T feed them red
nectar. Plain sugar water (4 to 1 ratio) is better for them. The red
dye could cause them problems.
