Don , sorry to post this here but the noise on the other group bugs me too
much .
AN .......
In the fert store all that is available is Calcium AN . Is the Cal an
additive to keep it from being used as a blasting agent ?
I have a shot to do in two weeks and need another 200# on AN .
Thanks ,
Greg

Just curious... What is the application of ANFO (or AN) in a
legitimate shoot? Is it just to make an impressive 'ground salute'?
Site preparation? Or something else?

Ah, thanks. I didn't realize a 'shoot' could refer to a blasting
project. I assumed 'shoot' was a reference to a pyrotechnics display.

A legitimate shoot is what a licensed blaster does in various applications.
The mining industry uses more ANFO in a day than anyone else uses in a year.
If you were looking you noticed that Greg prefaced his question to me "here"
because of the noise and BS on the "other" ( explosives engineering ) group
because "here" there are fewer KeweL boMBerz posting trash that there are
over "there". ANFO has no legal or even useful "fireworks" properties. It
is purely a blasting agent suitable for moving large quantities of rock
around. It may be used for certain movie effects but there are a hell of a
lot of things better suited for that purpose too.

Well ......... you pryo's are an inventive lot. I find 17 formulae using ammonium nitrate
in my DB. I have great faith in Ellern, MC and AMCP — a lot less in faith Allen, except for
the Amid Pulver which I believe was a blasting agent.

Actually we do make salutes with it . It is a propratary formula . We also
use it to make shooting targets .
The shot that I need it for is to move a large quantity of caliche
impregnated rock . My local ag supplier does not carry the stuff that we
used to buy from him .

Harrumph. Our Don Haarmann posted the original call for vote and purpose
statements for the formation of this group just the other day. This
particular thread is, indeed, on topic according to those messages. HeH.

Looking these over and noting the poison gas producers I wonder which gas is
produced? Is it NO2 or impure N2O? Impure N2O must be flowed through a water
column to take the steam and various toxic impurities out of the gas when it
is generated by heating AN + (secret ingredient) in a closed gas generator.
Then again N2O is an asphyxiant if breathed without mixing with O2.
