.....sing as tenor,baritone,and bass IN KEY...and sound great in all
three "voices." Not saying the artist does roles in all three voices on
stage..but is actually able to sound wonderful in all three on a live
recording...plus sings SCAT like a real jazzy guy.....Come on.....you
should know by now.....CH |

Thomas Quasthoff, the musician's musician. The man must have nearly
three working octaves, IMO. Amazing.
Another remarkable thing about his voice: while it's not exactly the
biggest sound I've ever heard, I always get the uncanny sensation in
person that his voice is not coming from him but from somewhere in the
middle of the auditorium. In person, it has an aural "closeness" to it
that I can only recall having experienced from one other baritone:
Robert Merrill. Yet Quasthoff's instrument doesn't sound puffed up or
inflated in any way, always focused and "slim" with a clear core to the
tone. It doesn't matter where one is sitting, since the voice projects
so cleanly throughout the hall.
It doesn't hurt that the man's singing is so naturally musical and
stylistically acute at all times, together with his being a born
communicator.

I have a pirate recording on which he does ALL the men's
arias from Zauberflote (including Tamino's). We speak of
Quasthoff, of course? |
