Developed a hangman word game for Test Cricketers and ODI Cricketers.
http://crickethangman.50webs.com/index.html
-contains the links for the Test Cricketers and ODI Cricketers applet.

The idea is to guess the cricketers name in 7 chances, the names being
used are referenced from the cricinfo player page.See if you can get a
good streak going.!

Good stuff. I did the Test one and ended my 10 win streak on MSK
Prasad (whose first name is Mannava, apparently).

Nice piece of software. My initial reaction is that there are a lot of
obscure Test players out there. Got a couple of easy ones, then
stumbled on Tom Puna, Joe Cox, and Travis Dowlin, somehow guessing
Peter Smith in between. Can't say I've ever heard of any of those
four.

Thanks for the comments folks.Yes you may get obscure ones too, since
the list encompasses all test cricketers, odi cricketers who have ever
played.
The Goto Player Page button will take you to the CI player page, that
is a chance to learn more about some unknown cricketers.
My streak so far for ODI has been 22 ( which I got once) and Test (12)
-I have no clue about the early test players.

Started off with Harry Jupp and got run out with such a obscure
combination of vowels, then eked out a streak of 5 before being
stumped by Wasim Jaffer.

The Indian and Sri Lankan names are the trickiest, especially the
shorter ones.

Looks good. Got a streak of six on my first turn, lost on 'Bill Woodfull' -
guessed the wrong vowels and failed to strike it lucky with the 'l'.

Nice work.

Just a suggestion, make the letters & '-'s of the same size with a
good space between '-'s. Sometimes, it appeared that there were less
missing letters than what it actually was

Will try to keep the User Interface Changes in mind.I am also planning
to introduce a logic to build the level of toughness progressively. So
as you start out,you get easier ones, and as you go on,it becomes
tougher.
Level of toughness will be a heuristic on the basis of number of
internationals played and toughness of word

And I just got my best streak of 38 before I got bamboozled on Vijay
Yadav!

-Sumant

My only sour point is that it is very difficult to figure out Asian
names. I prefer playing Test cricket since the proportion of Asian
names is less and I can safely start with vowels to work out the
English names. After the site becomes famous enough, another project
would be to develop a cheatsheet - figure out the commonly used
letters in cricketer names Smile Wont be that efficient, given that
muslim cricketers might have a higher frequency of I's and U's.

The letters which occur most frequently in the English language are
ETAOIN SHRDLU. Can anyone write a script to figure out the equivalent
for test and ODI cricketers?

For Test cricketers:
a (66%), r,e (50+%), n,s,i (40+%), h,l,m,d,t (30+%),
c, g, w, j, b (20+%), u, k, p, f, y (10+%), z (3%), q (2%), x (1%)

Those are the percentage of names in which those letters appear at
least once.

Mohan

Thank you. (And thanks to Sumant too, for the game).

Tried it out with ARENSI HLMDT. It worked well, overall, but failed
miserably with Pat Pocock.

Jayen

It's good fun, but I am rubbish at it.

Suggestions:
1) display the cumulative points score as well as the game tally.
2) display the length of the current streak too.

Nice game. 17 streak on my first try (ODI). Stumped by TINO MAWOYO at
level 6. Avg score 4.67.

- Chan

Ended up with 40/6, av 3.59, total 39.46 after 11 levels.

1. Avoid repetitions

There may be a bug floating around, because I ran into Steve Waugh
four successive times (and then gave up, although conceivably I could
have hit 70-ish at that pace). There's no trouble with repetitions per
se, but I've noticed a few repetitions on successive trials, but no
other repetitions. I assume sampling with replacement is significantly
easier on the programming than sampling without replacement, so it's
OK to take the chance that a repetition will randomly occur.

2. Discard initialled names.

This one threw me initially. I was surprised to miss VVS Laxman, and
later lucked into Bob Taylor (not an initial, of course, but a
nickname rather than a proper name). The policy of using the name off
the CI page seems like a very sensible one, and I can't think of a
better alternative.

I did hit 40 a few days ago, with a score of 43-something or so, I
think. But, like Sumant, many of those were names I guessed without
knowing there was a Test player by that name. The pool of Test players
is vast.

That is strange ,I played quite a few times, did not see it repeat,Are
you talking about repetition within the same game or across different
games?
The randomiser gets initialised at the start of a new game ,so within
the same game if it gets repeated it must be a one-off occasion.
Across games, yes chances are that it may get repeated, however that
also has not happened for me yet Sad.

Which is why I prefer playing the ODI version, since I seem to know
most of the names. And as for the initial names,I just had to have a
consistent
policy with names being same as cricinfo page.So maybe we can shoot
cricinfo a mail to have names like 'Dad' Weir and 'Young Jack' Hearne
removed and replaced by their more common names Smile . !!

Repetition within the same game. I hit Steve Waugh the first four
times within the same game, then quit. And I've had a couple of other
names come up twice in a row within the same game. I don't know
anything about Java, but perhaps it's some kind of run-time error.
