Enigma 1564 - My favourite number
New Scientist magazine, 23 September 2009.
By Albert Haddad.

My favourite number consists of several
digits and is not included on my list of
five whole numbers (comprising non-zero
digits) written below in capital letters,
where different letters stand for different
digits and the same letter stands for the
same digit.

I can tell you that although my favourite
number is smaller than the BEST number,
which is twice as GOOD, and larger than the
ODD prime number, there is a BETTER number
that is bigger than the OTHER number, which
is exactly 25 times my favourite number.

What is my favourite number?

Ciao,
Chappy.

For GOOD * 2 = BEST there are only 5 possibilites:
1339 * 2 = 2678
1882 * 2 = 3764
2339 * 2 = 4678
3229 * 2 = 6458
4881 * 2 = 9762
Because ODD is a prime, GOOD must be 4881 and BEST must be 9762.
Because OTHER is divisible by 25, R must be 5, and thus BETTER is
972275.
Now H must be 3 as all other non-zero digits are already used, and so
OTHER must be 82375.
This means that the favourite number is 3295.

Ciao,
Chappy.

Today's top banana goes to lining up which which is which which for which
number.

However my list of assumptions, ignoring the tautology OTHER < BETTER,
is

ODD e Primes < x < BEST = 2 * GOOD
25 * x = OTHER

since R isnt zero, x is odd and ER = 25 or 75.

ODD holds the key - there are 15 potentials (by inspection) and they drop
like flies
in the face of the above plus BEST=2*GOOD
leaving
811 = ODD (ODBESTGRH = 819762453)
and x = 3295. HTBR hm ... Doh (_8^(|)_

I was expecting this to spell a word so probably need to try again but Im
not well tday...
