I remember seeing a couple times when I was a little kid, in the late
'70s, a film about Orpheus' journey to the underworld to retrieve his
dead wife, Eurydice. He enters the underworld when an earthquake
makes a cleft in the earth and stairs appear along one of its edges,
down which he can easily climb.
For those who don't know the story, he is a lyre player from Greek
Mythology who asks Hades, god of death and ruler of the underworld, to
let his late wife live again. Hades agrees on the condition that he
not look at her until she is above the ground again. In the film, she
rides behind him on a boat, and they either sail or walk past
Syssifus, while he is trying to push his rock up the hill. She
follows him up the stairs, but he looks back at her when he gets to
the top, but before she has, condemning her to death forever.
Does anyone know who made this? I don't remember any dialogue, just
narration. So maybe it wasn't produced in English, originally. |
