I don't think anyone on the rec has met "Princess", the distaff side
of the geezer duo (Ralph, Call To Destiny being the other) but tonight
we had to say goodbye.
I came in this morning - she was down, but hopped up for her breakfast,
but had a laceration on her rear pastern. We cleaned it, wrapped and
told her she had to stay in because of the mud. Not her favorite thing.
Came home this evening to find her down, unable to get up. I went
next door to the neighbors who are farmers and asked for some help.
One guy was familar with dairy cows and offered to help try to get
her back on her feet. He grabbed another guy who had some size
to him. She tried but could not get on her feet. Nina removed the
wrap, went white and said "I see bone." (Nina was a small
animal vet tech for eleven years so when she goes white it's
major.) She called the emergency service to get the on-call
vet. By this time Princess had scrambled into the aisle - the
guys offered hay and water - she was nibbling on the hay and
did not seem to be in any distress. Color good, respiration
normal. Nina talked with the vet - she said she was coming
out. I knew this was really, really bad, when she scrambled
to her feet. I handfed her hay to keep her up so the vet
could examine her when she got there. When Doc Audrey
arrived there she examined her quickly and said there was
a lot of laxity in the pastern joint and said there was a poor
prognosis. She examined her more closely and discerned
that the joint was dislocated - catastrophic breakdown. So
there was no choice and we had her euthanized on the lawn.
(We could have shipped her for more exensive diagnosis
but I told the vet "That's for me, not for her."
Nina bought Princess from Jeff. After she bought her Rachel
Kennedy (nee Baker) said "You must never rename her."
And we did not although her nickname was "Beautiful One"
Which was perfectly apt as she was a dropdead gorgeous
horse as only a well-bred Thoroughbred mare can be. If
you just saw her head she could pass for an Arabian. And
oh, she was such a good jumper. She had perfect form
and the closer you put her to a jump the better she jumped
it. She was the good old Tb blood, by Winged T.
She lived a good life and maybe it could have been longer
but she was sound and vital and no one who looked at
her would have thought she was 24. So she never had
to be feeble or lame.
But I'm really going to miss her and it really hurts.
Through tears,
Sue

Sue,
I am so sorry to hear of your loss.
A week ago we had to make the same choice for our sweet TB mare.
She was also a complete package of a TB.
Was a sweet one to have around. Again, my empathy and sympathy
for you all.

Rest in peace dear and noble Princess. May the heavy hearts of those
who loved you be lightened by warm memories of your long and vibrant
life.
Sue and Nina, my thoughts and sympathies are with you.

There is the best obituary any human or horse could ask for.
Condolences on your loss.

Theodore Roosevelt:
A typical vice of American politics is the avoidance of saying anything
real on real issues.
A vote is like a rifle; its usefulness depends upon the character of the
user.
Behind the ostensible government sits enthroned an invisible government
owing no allegiance and acknowledging no responsibility to the people.
I care not what others think of what I do, but I care very much about
what I think of what I do! That is character!
It is difficult to make our material condition better by the best law,
but it is easy enough to ruin it by bad laws.
The worst lesson that can be taught a man is to rely upon others and to
whine over his sufferings. If an American is to amount to anything he
must rely upon himself, and not upon the State; he must take pride in
his own work, instead of sitting idle to envy the luck of others; he
must face life with resolute courage, win victory if he can and accept
defeat if he must, without seeking to place on his fellow-men a
responsibility which is not theirs. |

Oh, Sue, and Nina also, I am so sorry for your loss.
I saw the pictures you posted, and what a beautiful girl. Such presence and
such a gorgeous head. When I saw those pictures she reminded me a lot of
Ella, Harlee's sister, in her head, which you once remarked on being so
pretty. Harlee and Ella both have a lot of TB blood.
I am so glad that she seemed in no pain, and went quickly. You gave good
lives to one another.

Losing a good one hurts (even when they've lived a good life).
Remember the good times. |
