Watch it... one of the best movies ever. Great acting by everyone -
Charles Boyer, Ingrid Bergman, Angela Lansbury and Joseph Cotten. |

Don't do that. |

Actually, it sets you up for disappointment. After you see the crew
waiting for Miller--Van Cleef, Sheb Wooley, Robert J. Wilke--nothing
less than Liberty Vallance would do. Instead you get a cypher. |

I don't have tcm atm.
Although I'm not a big fan of Ingrid Bergman...just don't find her
uh...fascinating? A bit like Meryl Streep, a fine/great actress but
still leaves me more or less cold.
I actually preferred the earlier (1940) version of _GASLIGHT_ with
Anton Walbrook and Diana Wynyard. The Boyer/Bergman version I thought
rather overdone.
It doesn't help that Bergman looks about as frail as Marjorie Main,
and taller than Boyer as well. Wynyard's slight astigmatism and her
soft frailty makes her look ready for the deep end at frame one.
Walbrook is as matchless as ever ("Zee rooobieezz"), but neither
version made Paul English, as the play did. Something essentially
English about him--is he crazy, or is that just normal British middle
class sadism?
So the finest casting may have been the NY stage version, a major hit,
with Judith Evelyn (Miss Lonelyhearts), Leo G. Carroll as Rough--and
Vincent Price. Watching him on TCM in "Dragonwyck" gave me a good idea
of what he did with it. |

Watched Hitchcock's NOTORIOUS the other day. That was very good acting
by Ingrid though, and I actually liked her in that movie.
Overall I wasn't greatly impressed with the Notorious though...nothing
exact to pinpoint...it's a very well made movie, nearly flawless except
I didn't completely buy some twists of the plot and it felt a bit dated,
especially the overly romantic twist. Also perhaps a bit dragging at
moments...in the end a memorable classic staircase scene. Still I don't
think one of Hitchcock's best.
I love Notorious. i really like the way the relationship between
Bergman and Grant's character develops. the "fat head full of pain"
line that Grant mentions on the staircare tips off who "Devlin" is
referring to. (Hint: the director had kind of a big head.)
this might be Bergman's greatest role. i totally dig this film.
Me too. I think Grant must be complimented on his performance also,
one of his best.

A very simple and yet gripping story with young and cute(not sweaty)
Grace Kelly...and suspiciously older Gary Cooper.
It made me think how in old movies the men are often aged(charismatic?)
while nowadays the typical male lead looks like someone who hasn't
started shaving yet. Cultural change?
Recently, some researchers said there may be a link between hormonal
changes linked to use use of the birth control pill and women being
attracted to men who are less masculine.
No telling yet where their findings will be substantiated, but there
is certainly a big difference between the Damon /Depp /Di Caprio types
and the Connery / Bronson /Lee Marvin types.
Look up Lon Chaney's hit "Tell It To The Marines", from 1926--it was
also his personal favorite, since he played it straight, no make up.
He's a Marine Sergeant trying to turn William Haines into a
leatherneck, and deeply, shyly in love with Eleanor Boardman. So
naturally she falls for Haines.
It's like Lee Marvin losing Angie Dickinson to Tab Hunter. |
