I just came upon this Youtube of Giacinto Prandelli singing the Pazzo
son from Manon Lescaut, from an RAI TV production in the mid 50's. I
think he is wonderful here, and he can beef up his voice more than I
had thought possible. I had Prandelli in a number of LPs as a
youngster, including the first Tebaldi Boheme, and the Christoff
Mefistofele highlights, and I thought him bad in both of these
recordings. But here, the voice seems to bloom and exhibits a
brightness and freedom that were lacking on the recordings cited.
So bravo to Prandelli. What might some of you think? (BTW, the almost
silent soprano is Clara Petrella.)
