I saw the Encores production and loved it, but never dreamed it would
come to Broadway. It did, and I was really hoping it would be a
success. While the story is extremely silly, the score is wonderful,
and the lyrics rank with the cleverest I have ever heard sung on a
Broadway stage. I will probably go to see it again!

I will see it again, too, Paul. They just don't write music like this
anymore! What a wonderful score and, yes, a very silly story.

God, do I feel old. I remember seeing a revival of Finian's Rainbow
on Broadway more than fifty years ago! I think it was the first
musical I saw.
That would have been the 1955 City Center production--the only revival
the show's had in New York till now! The Woody was Merv Griffin, of
all people--his only "Broadway" credit.
Wasn't there a movie version, too? Or was it perhaps televised? I seem
to remember seeing it on-screen, but don't remember whether it was in a
theater or on the small screen.
There was a movie version with Fred Astaire and Petula Clark (I think)
but it wasn't very good.

Yes, indeed, you are right. It was at City Center, and marvelous. No
one thought of body mikes then...

On that topic, last night we saw a production of Paint Your Wagon by a
small Manhattan company called "Musicals Tonight." It was performed
in a small (sold out) theatre, and it was wonderful. NO MIKES! NO
AMPS! Live singing! The last time I heard live singing on Broadway,
I think it was the first run of Man of La Mancha. (this small theatre
is on Broadway, but in the West 70's) We are looking forward to
seeing Silk Stockings there next Friday night.

Silly, yes - but as I recall, rather fun. Try suffering through some of
the innumerable Western movies from the same era! (I was recently
exposed to a very young, handsome John Wayne in "The Angel and the
Badman", and as though Wayne's dubious acting talents weren't bad
enough, the dialog was unbelievably stilted and silly.) |

You neglect to mention whether there was a full orchestra, which I
doubt. That, and the small venue, would definitely enable a lack of
miking. I'm no fan of amplification, but the practice of miking a
stage on Broadway goes back at least to the mid 40s. And there was
body miking on Broadway in the early 50s. Anna Maria Alberghetti, a
(supposedly) classically trained soprano, used a body mike when she
appeared in CARNIVAL! in 1961. There is a classic anecdote about her
forgetting to switch it off between scenes and
broadcasting her trip to the crapper over the theater loudspeakers. |

No, there was no orchestra. However, I have seen unmiked productions
that included an unamplified stage orchestra as well. I don't
believe that the NYGASP (Gilbert and Sullivan in NY) productions used
amplification in their small (symphony space) house, but they have had
to now that they are in CIty Center, and I do not enjoy it as much.

That's discouraging. I have not seen them since they started the City
Center performances, and now I am not inclined to do so. (Disclaimer:
I sang with the company a many years ago.) |

A many years ago, when you were young and charming?

Yeah, there really WAS a time when actors and singers (not just opera
singers) were required to project their voices well enough to be heard
by live audiences! |
