The David Haye image...

Ive followed Haye for some time - I remember the press conferences against
the likes of Mark Hobson (fight that never happened), and various other
events and fights.

A couple of things become apparent. The hype to sell a fight, as DCI
remarked comes off as "pretty vile", at times but I think Haye hasn't much
option in terms of promotion. Mainly because he's set his image up as this
cool, RnB "Craig David" style persona. Going round, crashing press
conferences and events and talking trash about other fighters is the perfect
way to sell fight tickets and generate interest. Ali was a master at it -
again this is not to compare them in the ring, there is no comparison there,
but the tactics of promotion and so forth are the same. Ali however, had the
loud wide mouthed almost tongue in cheek persona, whereas Haye cannot do
this without compromising the RnB star image.

However, check any post fight interviews - Lolenga Mock comes to mind. Haye,
not really in great shape was floored by a blown up light heavyweight. The
knockdown was heavy I tell you, when he staggered up, he almost fell into my
camera at ringside. He then rugby tackled Mock to survive. Later in the
fight he came out on top, but Mock protested at the stoppage. In the post
fight interview, Haye was remarkably honest about how he had been shown as
more fragile now, how other fighters might fancy the job more, and he also
agreed that the stoppage of Mock was too soon.

Same too with Carl Thompson. After the fight in the press conferences we
were all at he said he felt the media had been disrespectful of a man of
Carl's achievements, and the whole reason he wanted to fight Carl was to
prove against the best (bear in mind he took Carl on with only a few fights
under his belt).

Haye is not a popular fighter like Hatton was. He doesn't even have a hype
machine like Amir Khan or Calzaghe did (that tell you they are the most
popular fighters ever, when arenas are half empty), so he has to generate
the interest somehow.

Just my $7.6

I dont think it does it all. Haye is pretty intelligent and it's pretty
clear it's all tongue in cheek. Well, that's the impression I get.

He is an honest guy : listen to what he actually says about Valuev in a
real interview rather than the blown up hype - he's remarkably honest
and candid.

I think he's a lot more popular than Khan can ever be. And Khan has just
sealed his fate with his somewhat ridiculous "people are jealous of me"
interview. They might well be, but dont tell people you know it.

Bear in mind we are viewing from an English perspective.
The USA is only just getting used to "tongue in cheek" with the likes of
Gervais and Steve Carroll.
This is not to disrespect the USA (I just got back from Hollywood I love
it!) only as Ben Folds once said
"in the USA they dont know when you're taking the piss".

Exactly.

My point was David Haye at similar stages in career. I think he is more
popular now, yes, but originally Khan was given immense hype surrounding him
even turning professional.
Even with all that, he isnt the popular ticket seller, but still attracts
media.
Calzaghe was the same (though he wasnt given the same hype from early on, he
did earn it with his Eubank win).
Haye doesn't have those resources so has had to earn his name in the press
conferences and stunts.

Ali was annihilating Cleveland Williams and Archie Moore and
challenging, AND then ACTUALLY FIGHTING, the incredibly dangerous
Sonny Liston. And he did it with a funny intelligence. And calling
someone an ugly bear is not the same as having tee shirts with
decapitated heads on them.

Not everything Ali did was funny or smart.
Again my point previous to this was Haye has a different image to Ali, and
the means of promoting is different.

Must say I, like everyone else, am very dissapointed that the Klitschko
fights fell through, and yes Haye has to take responsibility there.
Looking at his current resume though - his third fight at heavyweight and he
is fighting a champion - thats still a pretty tall order.
His cruiserweight career has been great too. Fighting the dangerous Carl
Thompson after only a few fights showed great ambition. Something those
aligned to a certain promoter have avoided for many years......
