The Seattle Times has a video on their homepage (at the moment,
anyway) that says loons and common murres are dieing because of an
alge bloom that removes the waterproofing from their feathers. Hard to
believe.

Here is  site with more information

A stream on the PA/WV border was recently poisoned by golden algae
that destroyed 90% of the fish and many aquatic invertebrates. The
stuff is spreading throughout the country, possibly carried from place
to place by birds. The fish kill was ghastly, many large muskies,
pike, bass, etc. Things were made worse by chloride mine wastes being
discharged into the stream that created suitable conditiions for the
alga to flourish. What had been an excellent fishing stream is now
essentially dead.

It hardly seems fit to drink.
