So in animation (modern TV animation especially) who is the real
"director"?

The person who supervises the storyboards? Or the person(s) who does
the sheet timing.

Having done both, it would never occur to me to consider timers to be
directors. What they're closest to are the actors.

Now, I'm sure you have lazy directors that just let the timing pass by
them unchecked, and I'm sure you have lazy timers that don't provide
more than a rudimentary breakdown, passing the acting off to the
'animators' overseas.

For instance, on Wild Thornberries, 90% of the time Donny runs into
scene, jumps up and down, and runs off. It doesn't matter what he does
or how he does it or often even if he does it. For that we write
'ad-lib' and let the overseas guys do what they want; they've got Donny
down cold.

On the other hand, Deborah and Nigel got really closely timed, with tiny
keyframes drawn all over the x-sheets. I could have more easily done
the actual key frame animation on them than time them at the level I did.

But I still wouldn't consider it directing, I'd consider it acting.
'cause it came to me set up, with Deb sitting in a rocking chair, over
on audience right, speaking on cue.

As to the person supervising the storyboards, I'd hope they're being
watched by the director, but I've never worked with it broken out that
way.

Stargate Universe SGU: It puts the "U" in "SUCKS"!
It's the show 'Defiling Gravity' would be if DG had more regulars,
fewer abortions, worse writers, and no budget for lighting.
Remember, you can't spell "disgust" without SGU!
