Along my local canal, I saw a Bell's Vireo, a western species that is
quite uncommon in South Florida. A photo is on my blog here:

Hope you are able to access it-- some of you had quite a bit of
trouble last time.

Had to scroll down a bit, but no problem.

Nice pictures.

I don't know enough to confirm or deny the ID.

And I'm bleary-eyed from fighting Windows 7 for hours.

As usual I loved your "blog." Thanks for that and the pictures.
Being able to take pictures must certainly help in being able to
identify an out of range bird. Good job.

Nice photos Ken. Certainly looks like the Bell's. I know you didn't ask

for confirmation. But what the heck, we give it anyways. Nice website,
too.

Thanks, Mary Ann! Truth is, without the photos I would not have had
the courage to report this out-of range bird. I was afraid that it
could have been a juvenile White-eyed or Blue-headed Vireo not
illustrated in my field guides. It did not vocalize, and also its bill
looked proportionally bigger than ANY illustration in Sibley Peterson
or latest NGS guides.

Interestingly, although eBird required me to verify the identity when
I reported it for my location, I found several other reports of Bell's
fairly nearby, during the past 12 months. Therefore, it appears not to
be as unusual as the local ABA and other regional guides (as well as
maps in the general guides) seem to indicate. Perhaps it is expanding
its migratory range-- or, awareness is making birders more courageous
about reporting undocumented sightings.

And, Larry-- I just added max memory to my XP desktop and it is really
cooking. Had been thinking of upgrading to Windows 7 (I really dislike
Vista-- it treats you like a dummy when you try to find a file or a
folder), but your experience gives me second thoughts.

Ken
Ken, if you do not like Vista you probably will not like Win7 it is

basically a Vista upgrade.--I am going to stick with XP for as long as
possible.

I too plan to stay on XP (most of my machines probably won't run 7
anyway), and yes, 7 looks like the beta release of Vista, but from all
I have heard they have fixed most of the major annoyances while
retaining some of the (annoying in their own way) security redesigns.

But don't confuse me with somebody that knows what they are talking about.

Thanks, Larry and Rick-- I think I'll stick with XP for my desktop. I
heard that Microsoft would stop supporting it in the near future
(meaning it would not update patches for security breaches???)-- I'm
not the one to always applaud the latest song.

Hey Ken,
Microsoft is a master at planned obsolescence. I'm running XP on a
laptop and a desktop. but I also have another desktop running NT
that isn't connected to the internet, so no need for security updates.
I'll stick with XP until the fat lady sings, after that ... ?

I personally don't see myself changing OSes anytime soon, but I have a
copy I've been running in a virtual machine for a while now and it seems
like Win7 is what vista always should have been. It seems to have XP
performance (much better than Vista) and some features new to Windows.

I think there is talk about support ending sometime next year but, I am

thinking that it may be extended because the business world is not going
to be flocking to Win 7

I have a need to be fair.

I have working with "computers" since they were bigger than some
houses--an in general, every implementation of a new version of software
has more pain and agony than anybody but me and one or two others is
willing to admit. Particularly if they sold the stuff.

The only time I have seen Vista is on my son-in-law's laptop--all of the
machines here are XP (one NT server--currently cold and dark--thinking
of putting an OS with an "X" in its name on it).

The pain mentioned with my wife's new "Notebook) has been equal parts of
"new OS version" (where the ____ did they put the .....?) and "any new
machine" (loading software, configuring stuff, "personalizing", moving
stuff from old machine(s) to new, and so on).

If it has something you want, or replaces something you loathe--go for it.

If it is "the latest" and you have a a need to be "with it" I wouldn't
bother.

But don't let my grumpiness color your thinking. There were things
about 3.11 that I hate.

(I am kinda CLI oriented.)
