BROADCAST OF OCTOBER 19

NATALIE: Passoh Dohblay — Impossible music! No Paso Doble danced. OK
dance. My score=21; Judges'=22

AARON: Argentyne Taingo — Bad music! Clumsy but cool. My score=24;
Judges'=24

MICHAEL: Paso Doble — Not good music! Stiff, rough. My score=21;
Judges'=21

MÝA: Tango Argentino — Horrid music! Smokin' dance! My score=27;
Judges'=27

MARK: Paso Doble forced into Samba music! — Nice dance. My score=27;
Judges'=26

DONNY: Tango Argentino — Very good music. OK dance. My score=24;
Judges'=29

LOUIE: Tango Argentino — Music OK. Dance had no fire. My score=24;
Judges'=22

MELISSA: Tango Argentino — Good music. Fiery dance poorly executed. My
score=24; Judges'=23

KELLY: Paso Doble forced into ChaCha/Swing music! — She was doing
steps, not dancing. My score=21; Judges'=?

JOANNA: Tango Argentino forced into ChaCha music!* — OK dance. My
score 24; Judges'=24

GROUP: Disco Hustle — Five recognizable Hustle steps were danced. But
it was called “Disco Hustle” and I don't know what that is.

*Just as Swing dancers, Tangueros will dance their dance to anything!
Some years ago, I was investigating the ship I'd just boarded.
Overlooking a rail, I saw a couple of Tangueros on the deck below
dancing to Norteño music. I recognized the Leader as one of the
foremost local Tango teachers to whom I shouted “You Tangueros'll
dance to anything!”
He looked up and, recognizing me, shouted back “Just as you
Swingers!”

The judges' comments about having a different partner is a statement
that they are not Social Dancers. Last night I went to a bar where
there were many dancers, none with whom I'd danced before. I had
outstanding dances with three strangers because we're Social Dancers
who can dance with anyone who knows how to dance!

BROADCAST OF OCTOBER 26

A miracle: ALL of tonight's music was suitable for the dance danced!
Can't remember that ever before happening on this program.

MÝA: Jitterbug*. Lotsa Jive and Lindy Hop; not really Jitterbug/East
Coast Swing. – My score=24; Judges'=24

MELISSA: Waltz. Ugly, awkward, awful. My score=18; Judges'=20

MARK: Jitterbug. Too much Jive, too many acrobatics, but a good dance.
My score=27; Judges'=26

AARON: Waltz. Where was the Waltz? Unrecognizable dance awkardly
performed. My score=21; Judges'=25

MICHAEL: Waltz. Other than being off-time, the best Waltz so far. My
score=21; Judges'=20

KELLY: Jitterbug. Lotsa Jitterbug but not danced well. My score=21;
Judges'=20

LOUIE: Jitterbug. Lotsa Jitterbug danced well. Fun dance. My score=24;
Judges'=21

JOANNA: Waltz. Lovely dance. Best of the evening. My score=27;
Judges'=26

DONNY: Jitterbug. Where was the Jitterbug? Some Lindy, some Jive, not
danced well. My score=24; Judges'=24

MAMMBOH: Classic Mambo music, lotsa fun. Joanna earned her win.

*As far as I know, there's no real definition of “Jitterbug” but I
think most people agree that it's probably formally known as East
Coast Swing. It is definitely not Jive nor Lindy Hop.

I would totally disagree. Jitterbug can definitely be the Lindy Hop or
East Coast Swing. Lindy Hop, not East Coast Swing, is the primary
dance done in competitions at the American Jitterbug Championships,
the Australian Jitterbug Championships, and Camp Jitterbug. Even if
you go all the way back to 1944, in the movie "Groovie Movie" they
have a funny sequence about a jitterbug lesson, and you can clearly
see the dancers doing the Lindy Hop 8-count whip as a basic step of
the jitterbug.

And I guess I am missing whatever it is that you and the judges think
is so great about Joanna Krupa's dancing. She is OK most of the time
and sometimes shines. But more often, I see an awkwardness in her
feet, knees and arms that I don't enjoy watching at all. I thought it
was obvious that Mya should have been the winner of the mambo dance-
off. I have also found Donny to be an excellent competitor this
season.

And you did so very well. Thank you.

My comment would've been the same had Mya won. It was difficult to see
who was doing what but I thought they were quite equal in that dance.

Yup. He's doing well.

They like her more than I do and I've had some strong criticisms of
her dancing. I've given her 105 points, they 119. But I restrict
myself to being divisible by three so I can't give a score of, for
example, 16.

Did anyone notice the ugly heels that one of the three pro female
dancers wore with a skirt on the opening group dance number? They all
wore matching clothes, but not shoes. Ugh!

posthumously.

I'm watching this season in sort of a remote fashion. I'm not home
much at nights so I DVR and watch what I can as I treadmill in the
morning. So my take is probably a little more disjointed than one who
watches all the way through, start to finish.

That being said, there are some folks I'm really enjoying watching...
Aaron, Donnie, and sometimes Mya.

Speaking of Mya, it seems to me that she was such a strong contender
in the beginning, to the extent it was almost a case of 'who's the
pro?". But as the dance load increased she seems to have plateaued -
she doesn't seem to be dancing the multiple routines as strongly as
she was at the beginning and it's very obvious that she is not the
pro.

Loving Donnie, and it's nice that my pre-adolescent crush can be
resumed at this late date, LOL.

Kelly is not the most technical or showy of dancers but I have come to
admire her spirit and despite daddy Oz and tattoos and reality tv
shows, she genuinely seems like a sweet girl.

What puzzles me the most this season is the judges uneven comments.
Did someone blow Les? He used to be the arbiter of dance taste, at
least in the traditional ballroom dances, but now he's actually
being... dare I say..nice? Bruno seems to have been handed the role of
the baddie and Carrie Ann, well... 'nuff said. Performances they rave
about I'm scratching my head over, going "Whaaa???" And their scores
seem to be all over the board, much more so than other seasons.

And the music... [retch]

Loved watching the chemistry between Alec & Editya (sp?) on Tuesdays
results show. Beautiful couple.

just rambling..

score=21; Judges'=23

JOANNA: QuickStop music OK— Timing problems; stiff. My score=24;
Judges'=23

KELLY: FoxTrot music OK — Dull dance nicely done. My score=24;
Judges'=25

DONNY: Viennese Waltz forced into NC2S music* — Pretty dance difficult
to judge because of the wrong music. My score=24; Judges'=26

MÝA: Samba music good— Another smokin' dance absent tricks! My
score=30; Judges'=30

AARON: Samba music not good — Not much Samba but OK dance. My
score=24; Judges'=27

JOANNA: Paso Doble forced into Samba music — Too little Paso Doble not
well done. My score=21; Judges'=29

KELLY: Jive music OK — Dance OK. My score=24; Judges'=24

I think my scores are at greater variance from the judges' than any

*Failing to find the Waltz in the music, I got up asking my feet find
it. They found NC2S!

BROADCAST of NOVEMBER 23

Didn't think to take paper and pen so no report on scores BUT:

I was there! So was Buddy Schwimmer.

It was great fun! The 'tween acts rouser guy is absolutely terrific
and we weren't forced to see commercial announcements.

The set looks much better than on screen and the band's sound was
vastly superior to what we got on-air.

It was also nice to see the dancing without pans, cuts, close-ups and
all the other jazz that prevents us from seeing the dancers dance.

The floor is quite large and very nice to look at. It was swept 'tween
each act and aguy with some sort of spray and a cloth took care of
troublesome spots. I was impressed! After the broadcast, I got on the
floor to feel it of moderate speed but seemingly unsprung. I think
most of us would find it fine for dancing.

Whitney Houston, to be broadcast tonight, isn't here but she was
there. She wasn't satisfied with her first performance so did it
again, a treat for us.

Someone who probably knows told me tales about the competitive ice
skating world and all the nasty things they do one to another. Before
the group dance, each of the dancers embraced each of the others in
apparent support. It was nice to see and good to know. As I always say
I always say: Dancers Are Different!

Next to me was a girl from the Dominican Republic and another from
Costa Rica. They were very loud, screaming and stuff attracting much
favorable attention 'cause they were fun, not offensive. It wouldn't
suprise me if I got some air time because of them.

I didn't see last night's broadcast and won't see tonight's, too, as
I'll be at the Double H Club and will see you tomorrow at the USOpen
after a visit to the Getty Villa.

Writing from Torrance.

You did get air time, recognizably so! I was watching with a group of
dancers and we all pointed and shouted: There's Lew!!!
