Played a quick nine after working today.

Jumped onto #5 with a couple friends & promptly went par, birdie, birdie,
par, par then started back over on #1 & went par, par, par with #4 left.

Now for a little background -- we have a crew member that has no clue where
to set pins. When he gets the assignment you can be sure there will be some
stupid spots picked. I have quit telling him he is not being fair to
anyone -- because he just has this stupid blank look -- yes he plays
sometimes - but he's terrible.

Right now our greens are running as fast as they ever do. -- What does he
do? He has pins stuck on the severest part of the downslopes on several of
the greens.

I got lucky & 2 putted # 9 when my ball caught on a leaf part & stayed right
below the cup. On this hole one time he had a high school girl walk off the
green in tears because she 12 -- that is right -- twelve putted it since any
miss turned into a 12' - 15' putt back up the hill.

Today -- I came into my last hole 2 under par -- reached my last hole in
reg--- (par 5) & 5 putted it because he had done the same thing on that
hole.

Ah well -- what could have been -- still I esc'd the score for 36 with a .5
differential.... better than working

I've played courses with pins set in bad spots too, but nothing that
could cause a 12 putt or even a 5 putt.

Talk to the greens superintendent about the guy. The game is supposed
to be fun, not Oakmont raised to the 4th power.

That has been done --- no effect.

The course is a muni --- the pay is low -- they are short of help at this
time of year & don't want to hire -- so it seems we just get stuck with
him --- complaints are lodged often.

So why don't you do it? :-)

I do "it" as often as possible.

Dreams don't count. ;-)

And here I thought your wet dreams did count -- but let's not talk about
Jeff Gannon's role in things.

Saturday, I teed off on the #1 long par 5 into the rough 50' in front
of the tee. I finally hit my 5th shot out of it. Two shots later I
had a 4' putt which I made for 8.

Inconsistency - that is my game.

I remember a time I caddied for a buddy in a local tournament. The 18th
green has a pin set so badly that the organizers had to sit someone
greenside with a hose to water the green between groups to slow the
green down enough not to be insane.

I'll always remember that Mickelson put at Pinehurst #2... 2 feet from
the pin, and he misses... the putt rolled about 30 feet, right off the
back of the green!

That's right! What did he end up taking on that hole??

It would be funny if someone decided to call a similar situation
"unplayable", and took stroke and distance - similar to what Tiger did
when he putted into the creek at the Masters (I think he won that
year).

An unplayable (RoG 2Cool won't be neccessary:
I'd like to hear the TV/radio comments if a pro would draw RoG 27-1 a)
(stroke&distance): just drop/place a ball on that previous spot without
saying a word ;->

Yet if I were Phil Mickelson, I'd opt for a direct putt into the hole
without any penalties.

BTW: I'm still trying to figure out a situation on the green when an
"unplayable" under option 28 c) (within two club lenghts, not nearer to the
hole) might bring some profit to the player! That is, you are closer to the
hole than two club lengths, chose a replacement point at some different
angle to the hole and still have some advantage from it - maybe in a
Tough Pin tournament?

As for Tiger, I don't know the situation, but he will have taken RoG 26-1,
option a) - a perfect example of how to gain maximum profit from the rules!

Ciao,

Paul

I can see such a decision being a wash - for instance with a sand trap
in the middle of a green. But advantage? I'm not coming up with
one.
