Fielding not to blame?...

Maybe the Indian team has given up on improving their fielding but
during the Aussie batting there were quite a few easy runs given away in
the field.
A few examples that spring to mind,
Praveen Kumar diving over the ball at short third man to a Paine reverse
sweep and giving away 3 extra runs.
Raina having at a shy at the stumps when Ponting at the non-striker's
end was not even attempting a run and there was nobody to back up the throw.
Amit Mishra (on as a sub) overrunning the ball and giving away an extra
run (and twisting his ankle in the process).

All those (and more) runs saved would surely have kept Australia to
around 270. I am amazed Dhoni keeps talking about the batting and
bowling but not the fielding.

The batting is not going to bail out the other two disciplines every
time. I see India slipping to either four or five in ODI rankings before
not too long.

Gireesh,

Thanks for bringing this up. I have been hoping someone pointed this
out. As you know, I was the ex Fielding coach of the team before my non
existent contract got illegally terminated.

I am afraid you weren't watching closely. I have a lot more.

This was part of my regular exercise routine. I used to call it
underducking the ball where you would dive in such a way that your
entire body would be right over the ball and the ball and your body as a
result would come to a screeching halt. PK was never a regular part of
the team I would be coaching. So though he tried, he failed. If I were
there in this tournament, forget 3 runs, the Aus team wouldn't have got
1 run.

See dude, I can't give all my techniques away, but Dony can give you
specific details if he wants to. I had a technique for this too. All my
fielding practice sessions had a 100% hit ratio on hitting the stumps.
Gary actually once told me that he wished I continued to be on the team
and be the wicketkeeper of the side. That way we would have had a 50%
direct hit ratio (other 50% being at the bowlers end). Seeing me ensured
the team folks hit the stumps all the time. But since we were stepping
on Dony's job, we let it pass.

See, this technique I can share as its there in most fielding manuals.
When you over run the ball, you bend backwards to stop it. In this case,
Mishra did a mess of bending backwards. Again, like PK, he was never a
regular of the team I coached. My team had mastered the art of bending
backwards and throwing in 1 go. You can do a google for overrunning +
backward bending to see what I am referring to.

Yes. We had agreed when I was the fielding coach that he would talk of
batting (VP was to talk of bowling) and I would talk of fielding. It
will take him a bit of conditioning to come to terms to talking about
fielding too. Give him that space, will you?
