Maybe that's because you have a hole in your head?

A few of them actually... At least 5 that I know of... Pretty sure you
have at least 5 also...

Me, I'm with Paul. I suffered years of ear and sinus pain from diving
to the bottom of pools and lakes and when snorkeling in the ocean.
Maybe I should have taken a snorkeling class? No one ever advised me
how to equalize since no one I knew knew how to equalize either. When
I took my first scuba class, learning how to get rid of the pain was
the most amazing revelation.

Living in an area with mountains, I would have thought that you would
have learned how to equalize just from driving through the mountains as a
kid with your parents...

Maybe someone once told me to hold my nose and blow against it to
equalize the pressure when driving through the mountains or when diving
in the pool, but it's been so long enough, I don't remember it... As far
as I can remember, I've always been doing it this way... I guess it's
kind of like asking someone if they remembered when they first learned to
walk... I suspect that most people would say that for as long as they can
remember, they have known how to walk... Of course, we know that they
didn't always know how to walk, but it's just one of the issues with
memory that things in the far past either get forgotten or tend to blur
together...

I dunno - I grew up by the sea, swam in 4 and 5m swimming pools, never
occurred to me that equalising would fix the slight pain in ears as
you dropped down. If someone suggested to me I plug my nose and try to
blow out through my ears I probably would have laughed - I've only got
a lungfull of air - I aint wasting it having it bubble out of my ears!

Well, did you teach yourself how to dive or take a course?

I did a course late in life- 35

I spend a lot of time around pools growing up and equalizing the pressure
just seemed to come natural... As far as I can remember, I don't think
anyone ever actually taught me how to equalize...

I teach and I've never seen anyone spontaneously equalise unless

specifically told before hand.

I taught a guy OW and the following week he bought a full set of gear
and told me he was going diving off his rib solo with only his wife on
board...and you think 'oh fuck' but he came back happy having spent
his time pootling along at 4m..
So I spose you need to realise that most people have a bit of sense,
Darwin takes care of the rest.

I'm a firm believer in Darwin... Of course, he's been asleep most of the
times when I did my dumbest endeavors...

taking some scuba lessons soon.

Welcome to the ' happy ' group Matt. If you are going to take lessons
I would suggest any orginization except PADI unless you have money to
burn on useless certifications. I'm surprised Put Another Dollar In
hasn't come up with a c-card for bath tub diver yet.

Baloney.

For OW, PADI is good as any other.

The difference is not the agency, it is the instructor.

I occasionally like to rub in to a friend that thinks little of PADI
that I went from PADI training to GUE's cave training, before the days of
Fundies, and passed on schedule first try.

Student effort factors in to what you'll take with you.

PADI is not alone with silly certs, a good shop helps with the good
instructor choice. Finding both is the trick, and remember it's a business.

Everything is a business...getting a diving C-card is no different than
getting a private pilot's license.

Major differences in how businesses are run.

Some try to make a profit at every turn.

Some try to make a customer satisfied, and profit from a loyal customer.
