Yeah, I knew that'd get yer attention... Ha ha ha!

If you could change anything about ebay model auctions,
what would you do? Would you change how they are listed?
Would you require pictures? What would the pictures in-
clude? Would you remove all graphics in the auction listing
except for photos of the item?

Just a start of a new thread, that's all!

I'm not suggesting we make changes, I'm not making any
requirements that we sign petitions, nor that your suggestion
be anything more than a desire.

Here are a few from me, what _I_ would like to see in ebay
auctions:

1.) STANDARD LISTING FORMAT!!! I don't give a damn, but
do SOMETHING! Scale, Manuf., vehicle/kit name, apx. age,
and other detail. If you don't like that, then make up some-
thing else that fits. As long as a 1/72 Airfix Banshe (1984)
isn't going to be listed as a freaking 1/24 truck!

2.) PICTURE REQUIRED! Yeah, box slightly foxed... I've
gotten kits that wer bloody well badgered and left to the
hyenas after that!

3.) PICTURE OF THE KIT! Okay, I know that I'm way out of
line here, especially for the purists who like their kit in sealed
plastic or in box sealed. I wanna see the damned parts! I
know that this is just a me thing, but I'm within the rules of
the thread I started. So NYEAH!!!

Anyway, that's just my comments, happy postings!

I'd end the monopoly of using paypal only.

And then everyone gets the model because they bid the same
as you!?!? No!

Cap the bid at JUST before yours! That's even better! Then
you always win!

Just helpin' ... :)

the use of the one price USPS shipping box for a rate that way, way
over the top in terms of the weight of a model or figure, etc...
gotta stop the stupid shipping charges..

I'd agree with #1 & #2 above as well as eyeball's suggestion about
Paypal. I'd add that sellers were once again allowed to post negative
feedback for deadbeat buyers. As it stands now, the seller is at an
extreme disadvantage. One doesn't have to do anything wrong in his
service and may still get slammed without meaningful recourse.
As for #3 above, I'd prefer to leave a sealed kit sealed. Yeah, I
know, some have access to shrink wrap machines and can cheat.

Compared to our local New Zealand auction site, eBay is poorly
organised with listings hard to find and with absolutley no logic in
the way it presents itself. Check this link for how (IMHO) an auction
category should be listed.
http://www.trademe.co.nz/browse/categorylistings.aspx?mcat=0347-0924-1193-7771-&rewritten=true&sort_order=expiry_desc

The shipping costs and having to use Paypal are pains in the fundament
for sure. I can get 8 kits shipped from Czech Republic for less than a
single banged up box from the US and put it on CC. This is a gripe for
anything bought from the US as my classic item was one replacement key
for an IBM Type M keyboard - new key $2US, shipping $15US, for
Christ's Sake. Why could the shipper not throw it in a standard
envelope?

Pictures - box minimum and contents if not still shrink wrapped or out
of bags.

Description inaccuracies. Describing a Kitech counterfeit of a
Hobbycraft kit as 'reboxed Hobbycraft' is fraud and should lead to
immediate cancellation of the seller's account.

Seriously, I would not want anything othe than folded paper in
an envelope, for fear of receiving a ripped envelope and nothing
else.

Now, that being said, $15.00 shipping is stupid. But, you
have to check that on ebay. Caveat emptor, after all, is the
only way to go.

Remember, ebay takes a cut of the final SELLING price, not
the final TOTAL price, so padding the postage is gravy for the
seller. And unscrupulous.

1) You assume the seller knows the differnce.

2) You assume that an improper description, especially
when the box is in full view, isn't a huge warning sign to
stay well clear of the seller. Seriously, if the box description
is accurate, and the seller is too stupid/lazy/etc to get that
part right, why are you entertaining thoughts of dealing with
them?

Yep, it is the original kit moulds that went to Lindberg when Adams
went belly-up. I am bidding on it as I like old kits that have no PE

not that important to me, like my SMER Bulldog, if lit looks like a
Bulldog it is a Bulldog.

OK, I oversimplified on the standard envelope. I just checked at NZ
Post and I can send an item like that to the US for $8.09NZ ($6.10US)
by economy airmail including a small shipping container.

International shipping out of the US is so expensive, compared to
other countries, that that could be a hidden factor in the state of
the US economy. If it costs less to buy an equivalent item elsewhere
because of cheaper shipping, no-one will buy there. My own surmise and
no proof but I wonder how likely it is?

Not dealing with them myself and I always thought that ignorance is no
defence? It irritates me that counterfeiters make use of someone
else's R&D to produce cheap rip-offs. Taken far enough, there will be
no new kits because the originators don't have enough income (or go
bust through lack of sales).

Well, you only provide the one example to examine, and I think I

Post charges, so your basic premise seems wrong to start with. :-)

Now, the US economy is in the shape it is in due to a lot of
poor decisions made by our pols and business "leaders" alike. But,
I don't think the USPS is the reason for the US economic woes. I
would agree they could be considered synomonous, given their loss

not too unexpected...

Piracy is never to be condoned, granted. On the other hand,
"piracy is the ONLY way you are going to be able to get a DVD
of the orignal "Star Wars" film. You know, the one where Han
shoots first? And, I have been told, the quality is excellent,
because it originates from a laser disk of SW:IV

Now, who has created the problem here? Lucas, with his
"no, DVD's aren't good enough for my films, but I can release
'special' edition after 'special' edition on VHS", or the
"pirates"?

Perhaps had the studio been more forceful about kicking
Lucas off his ever expanding backside, there would still be a
pirate copy of "Star Wars IV" (doubtless there would!) but at
least *I* could *legally* purchase a copy of the movie I remember
from high school, and not simply wish I had a high quality copy
of the film I remember from high school.

Yeah, I hear this with every PR "emission" from the MPAA, RIAA
and SBA. I am sure you have your own "alphabet soup" of special
interests "trying to protect the artists", too. Thing is, it didn't
seem to stop Bach, Beethoven or even Stradivarius. Now, protecting
the (rapidly dwindling) profits of recording companines? Tough
shit. After all, they robbed the sheet music companies blind. But,
that knowledge has nothing to do with their behavior today. No sir.

Point is, I think craftsman will always look at a challenge,
and be motivated to conquer that challenge. And, there will be
people looking to cash in on a fake, dodge, scam, etc. Thatt, I am
fairly certain, hasn't changed, and is unlikely to.

interests "trying to protect the artists", too.

One other example of expensive shipping ex-US was a new IBM Type M

keyboard for $69 + $50 shipping. Managed to find a couple 2nd hand
locally for $5 each instead.
True, I had forgotten the leeches and control freaks of the RIA etc.
On reflection you are right, a good product will overcome copies
without resorting to treating customers like thieves. I avoid Sony
products after the rootkit fiasco and will only buy them if there is
no alternative. Maybe eventually musicians will be paid what they are
worth - IMHO they are worth about as much as a tradesman plumber.

I'd allow sellers to post negative FB.
I'd do away with 'mandatory comments' in the FB section. Who cares?
Just mark it Pos or Neg or Neut & go on.
If a seller puts in his auction that he will not be responsible for
uninsured items, then he MUST offer insurance as an option during
checkout. Heck, I'd make it a mandatory option during checkout,
period!
I'd do away with the automatic Delivery Confirmation when using PayPal
shipping labels. DC is a USPS rip-off to the highest degree, as it
doesn't guarantee confirmation of delivery to the correct address,
only confirmation of delivery where ever it was scanned at delivery.
When the addressee doesn't get it, the shipper just says, 'oh well,
tracking shows it was delivered'.
It's rare I see any auctions without pics now anyway............. But
pics should be in the auction.
Two of the most irritating things recently are all the damned 'pop-
ups' or whatever they are that happen whenever I just roll the cursor
over any number of auction things. Go away! Also, this 'best match' BS
they conjured up. I've dropped a few saved searches because I get 100
'best matches' that are only closely spelled, or misspelled, like what
I'm looking for. I have Contrail saved & rather than the occasional
Contrail model, I always get crap with the word 'central' in that
search. Hey, eBay, if I wanted a keyword 'central' I'd put it in
there! I collect Madelman action figures & I'm always getting searches
with 'madman' in the title. Go figure.
Spell check! For dumb asses that can't spell!
