Birdwatching in Washington, DC...

Hi everyone,

I'll probably be travelling to Washington DC at the begining of
November and I would like to know the best places to watch birds in
the area.

I'll only have a couple of days and I will not have car so I prefer
places close o in the city whre I could reach by bus or by metro.

I've been reading the webpage http://www.dcaudubon.org/birding from
the Audubon Society in DC and they give information about this.

Someone from the area can recomend me the best sites in November?

Washington DC is located at the tidehead of the Potomac River, which is just
upstream from Theodore Roosevelt Island, which is in turn just upstream from
Rock Creek Park, one of the largest wooded urban parks in the world, and a few
hundred yards from the Lincoln Memorial.

The Potomac River running downstream from TR Island -- and related tidal lagoons
on both sides of the river -- are good places to see waterfowl of many kinds.

If you fly in to Ronald Reagan National Airport, an area just upstream (north)
of the runway is called Gravely Point. It is not gravelly; it is Grave-ly after
an important naval officer early in the 20th century. Nice place, but not big
on birds, due to the heavy airline traffic at low altitudes.

The George Washington Parkway is a 4-lane road that runs east and south along
the Potomac from I-495 upstream (west) of Washington to Mount Vernon. If
driving, there are pull-offs for you all along. Or consider a long walk or bike
ride on the paved path from Lincoln Memorial Bridge all the way to Mount
Vernon. Along the say you'll travel through woodlands and along Potomac River
marshes and inlets where a wide variety of birds fluorish. This would be my
choice: Rent a bike and ride the 15 miles to Mount Vernon and back. Plan on
spending the whole day on this.
