After watching the recent run of "Fullmetal Alchemist" on CN, it
occurred to me that the "Fullmetal" universe provides something that I
wanted ever since I was a child: a coherent explanation for everything
that went on in the fairy tales.

Consider the story of Pinocchio. After seeing "Fullmetal" (or reading
the manga), it is pretty clear what is going on here. Lonely toymaker
Geppetto uses alchemy to attach a boy's sole to a set of wooden
auto-mail name Pinocchio. The Blue Fairy is an Alchemy Teacher who tells
Pinocchio that he can become a real boy by displaying courage and valor.
In his quest to become real, he finds himself mislead by chimeras named
"Honest John" (part fox) and Gideon (part cat). In keeping with the law
of equivalent exchange, Geppetto has to pay a heavy price for grabbing a
boy's sole: he get swallowed by a giant shark / giant whale (depending
on whether you read the book or see the movie). Pinocchio bravely
rescues Geppetto, prompting the Blue Fairy to use her Philosopher's
Stone to transmute Pinocchio into a real boy.

Feel free to explain your favorite fairy tale with Alchemy. The
Homunculi can fill in a lot of the gaps. (Is the witch in "Hansel and
Gretel" related to Gluttony?)
