"This is one decision Mr. Obama can't blame on George W. Bush," noted a
Saturday Wall Street Journal editorial, "though no doubt at MSNBC they will
try." Not just at MSNBC! The Chicago Sun-Times reports that "some Chicago
officials" (along with some unofficials) are blaming Bush:
President Obama could not undo in one year the resentment
against America that President Bush and others built up
for years, they said.
"There must be" resentment against America, the Rev. Jesse
Jackson said, near the stage where he had hoped to give a
victory speech in Daley Center Plaza. "The way we [refused
to sign] the Kyoto Treaty, we misled the world into Iraq.
The world had a very bad taste in its mouth about us. But
there was such a turnaround after last November. The world
now feels better about America and about Americans. That's
why I thought the president's going was the deal-maker."
State Rep. Susana Mendoza (D-Chicago) said she saw firsthand
the resentment against America five years ago when she was
in Rio de Janeiro. "I feel in my gut that this vote today was
political and mean-spirited," she said.
"I travel a lot. . . . I thought we had really turned a corner
with the election of President Obama. People are so much more
welcoming of Americans now. But this isn't the people of those
countries. This is the leaders still living with outdated
impressions of Americans."
Hey Chicago, has it ever occurred to you that maybe the International Olympic
Committee just isn't that into you? It's not as though the choices were to
hold the games in the Windy City or cancel them altogether. Maybe the IOC
delegates chose Rio de Janeiro on the basis of its merits as a venue. The
notion that it must have been motivated by hatred of America reflects a most
unattractive combination of arrogance and self-pity.

It's now time for healing, and for fixing the damage the Democrats did
to America. |

Exactly.
Olympic host selection seems to be a Rorschach test that everyone
projects their political bias upon. Four cities were in the running;
three didn't get it. It doesn't have to be about Bush or Obama or
anyone else. If Chicago didn't get it because the world is mad at the
US, what did Tokyo and Madrid do to tick everybody off?
The US has hosted the Olympics 8 times, South America never has. |

That's sort of like saying, "What did Manchester, Berlin, and Istanbul
do to tick everybody off in 2000, since enough of the world was mad at
Beijing to give those games to Sydney?"
I don't think the problem was Chicago per se; I think the problem was,
enough IOC delegates still have some problem with the USA - as for
Tokyo and Madrid, they were just innocent bystanders, and Rio just
happened to be the favored choice of the other three for whatever
reasons. I for one believe that anti-USA resentment played at least a
small part in Chicago being the first city eliminated.

I have no problem believing that political resentment was a *factor*.
But to hear various pundits tell it it was Bush's fault AND Obama's
fault. It was the US Supreme Court's fault. etc, etc ad nauseum.
The US has hosted the Olympics 8 times. There's no guarantee that they
will get the games every time they apply. |

Of course not - if there was, Salt Lake City would have hosted in
1998.
(Then again, sometimes being the USA doesn't hurt - who else could
have gotten away with hosting the "centennial games" in 1996 besides
Athens?)

Another possible reason America may not get the Olympics
for a LONG time is one provision of the Patriot Act that
makes the a number of major sports events, including the
Olympics, "National Security Events", making the Games
subject to far greater security regulations then other countries.
That is why I don't America will get another Olympics, or
another Pan-Am Games for a long time. And even if they
bring back the Goodwill Games, someday, don't ever
expect THAT to ever be hosted in America either.
The Patriot Act provision which would make a any
Olympics, Goodwill Games, or Pan-Am Games,
National Security Events, makes it more trouble than
its worth to have in America.
I think that could be what led to the cancellation
of the 2005 Goodwill Games, which were to have
been hosted in Phoenix. I don't think Ted Turner
saw the extra BULLSHIT of Patriot Act regulations
worth it. |

Chuckie, you're a brain-dead dipshit. The 2005 Goodwill Games
were planned for CALGARY.

GO AWAY, CHUCKIE!

Exactly, Chuckie, you don't think. You're so stupid, you don't
even know that Ted Turner stepped away from the Goodwill games
years ago.

What did I tell you about giving Chuckie ammunition?
The WINTER 2005 Goodwill Games were scheduled for Calgary -
unfortunately, most people do believe the SUMMER ones were, in fact,
going to be held in Phoenix (although an official decision may not
have been made before the games were cancelled after 2001).

Respectfully beg to differ, sir. Giving Chuckie ammunition is just
another way to watch him shoot himself in the foot.
What, a factual cite from a legitimate web site? Chuckie couldn't
find one of these if his lone brain cell focused for a thousand days
and a thousand nights. |
