Dear musicians and makers,

I write from Catania, Sicily, to announce the 3d edition of the
Marranzano World Festival: dedicated to folk musical instruments in
Sicily and the World.
This edition is dedicated to Zampogna (bagpipe) in Sicily and other
drone aerophones around the world. It will take place in various
locations of the historic center of Catania from 5th to 8th of
november.

The full program will soon be online on the website http://www.marranzanoworldfestival.it.

The highlights include obviously a vast representative of the Sicilian
bagpipes and their repertoire, with elder musicians carriers of
ancient traditions as well as young players focusing on
experimentation and innovations. The two main types of Sampogna in
Sicily are the very large "zampogna a chiave" from western Sicily,
used only for religious repertoire, and the smaller "ciaramedda a
paru" played in the provinces of Catania and Messina also for dances
and to accompany the singers.

We'll also have other types of italian bagpipes represented, and an
exposition of musical instruments hosted in the beautiful location of
the XIII century Castello Ursino.

As the project of the festival is that of creating musical crossroads
between traditions and cultures, we'll also have many other
instruments represented in concert and in workshops and seminars:
these include the sardinian Launeddas (three clarinets played with
circular breathing, basically a bagpipe without a bag), the East-
european Fujara, and the australian Didjeridoo, ancestral drone
instrument that will be broght to us by the elder Djalu Gurruwiwi,
considered the aboriginal authority on the traditional making and
playing of Ydaki (didjeridoo).

One concert will also be dedicated to the "Marranzano" in Sicily and
the different types of Jews'harps around the world, including guests
from Japan, England, and Russia.

The festival will end on sunday 8th november with a full day gathering
open to all musicians and makers of traditional musical instruments,
held in a beautiful XVIII century courtyard, including many workshops
on instruments making (double reeds, and jew's harps) musical
instruments techniques and repertoire (zampogna, tamburello,
marranzano) folk dance (sicilian traditional "ballittu" and others),
Musical instruments market, open stage, bagpipers gathering and "festa
a ballu" (folk dance party).

It is a great chance to visit one of the most beautiful and lively of
the Sicilian Cities, discovering at the same time the riches of
sicilian musical culture and traditions in an international setting.

If any of you would like to participate to the gathering/open stage
and/or with a musical instruments stand for the market, please let us
know in advance by writing at mo.mu at (no spam) tiscali.it

I copy below a list of main guests, and a program.

Hoping to see many of you in Sicily,
happy music to all,
ciao!
Luca Recupero

Thank you for posting this. I can't see that I could go but will
definately check the website. Do you mean that some or all will actually
be webcast? I'd love to hear many of the artists.

You might post to The Mudcat Discussion Forum -
http://www.mudcat.org/threads.cfm

Dear Abby,
thanks for answering.
Unfortunately we don't have founds for webcast, we do have it in mind
for next editions.

Thanks for the link to the MudCat! I posted it there too.

Sounds great, wish I could get there to hear it. Next time give us
Western Hemisphere types 6 months or so warning.

You might post to amateurbagpipemakers at (no spam) yahoogroups.com . I'm sure there
are people there who would be interested. You may have to join the
group. but that's pretty easy. If you have problems, send me a note. My
email is pretty easy to deduce from my return address - just remove the
capital letters.

Tell the list if you make a CD of the performances or post on utube, I'd
like to hear/see them.

Dear Jim,
Thanks for the reply and the suggestion. I am sorry about the short
notice, next time I' hope to be able to spread the news earlier!
In the meantime I'll try the yahoogroup you mentioned.

As far as Youtube, there are already a few short clips about past
editions in the Marranzano world Festival Channel, search Marranzano
and you'll find amazing jew's harp clips from first edition. We're
working on 2nd edition too. Just stay tuned and we'll have the 3d
edition there!

Thanks for spreading the word!!
Happy music!
Ciao
Luca
