My cd recordings of Beethoven's Waldstein sonatta have Vladimir
Ashkenazy completing the first movement in 8'25 minutes and Wilhelm
Kempff completing it in 11'19 minutes. What accounts for this
difference? Is there a rather large repeat that Ashkenazy leaves out,
or some such thing? Help with this question will be very much
appreciated.

There's an online recording of Kempff playing it,
leaving out the repeat in the early section of the
1st movement, and it takes him about 8:28.
So leaving out the repeat would be the likely
explanation.
