Jack came into my life as a neglected four month old Walker Hound
puppy. He had been tied to a tree and had big, raw sores on his neck
from an ill-fitting collar. I was looking for a competition hound,
and while his pedigree said “yes”, his condition said “look elsewhere”…
but I couldn’t walk away from him. A hundred bucks changed hands and
he came home with me.
A sweeter, gentler dog never lived. He was mostly invisible in the
house and was often mistaken for a pillow on the couch. When he was
outside in a kennel, you had to call him out of his doghouse…otherwise
he stayed put and just slept. Unless you went out at night, in the
dark, with a lead strap…then he came alive. For about five years, he
earned enough money as a tracking hound to cover the cost of all the
dog food I used for the whole kennel…he was exceptionally good at
tracking wounded bow killed deer, and we found over forty Pope & Young
bucks that may have otherwise gone unrecovered. He taught me a lot
about trusting a dog’s nose.
As a young dog, he moved with the grace of a gazelle. I once watched
him clear seven feet from a dead standstill, crouching like a cat and
softly leaping straight up and over. He was a lean, wiry dog, not
typical of his breed, and he had a regal elegance about him.
I knew Jack was getting close to the end of his journey in this life,
and that this would be his last summer. I had already made the
appointment, and old Jack, obliging to the last, confirmed it by
having a mild stroke a couple of days later. I dug his grave by hand,
in a clearing tucked in a grove of pines where the morning sun will
rest on him.
Goodbye, old friend. You were a Good Dog.

Oh how hard to lose such an animal. You both sounded like a true team.
I am so sorry, Sharon.

Aw hell Sharon, he was such a sweet boy.... I'm glad I got to meet
him.
I'm really sorry.
