You could probably make your mortgage payments for the year by renting out
the house for the 2-3 weeks.

Cap'n, ah need moor pow'r.
Yep, I had friends that rented their downtown SLC condo in 2002 (to
the FBI no less) during the Olympics. They took the whole family on a
cruise and still made a nice profit.
But, they missed the Olympics. We had some Canuck friends stay with
us and had went to the events and parties and had a great time. But
didn't make a dime, we just have memories, t-shirts and Canadian Team
Hockey jerseys. |

Do you think, perhaps, the fact THAT YOU HAD NO SNOW have anything to
do with that? |

They predicted a massive shortage of lodging in Calgary, which really
never came to pass. Granted the hotels and motels were full but few
people realized the profits predicted through renting their house or
rooms in their homes.
The City was prepared with hundreds, possibly thousands of rooms,
apartments and condos constructed specifically for the Olympics. Most
were dedicated for use by the athletes and the hangers on, but some
were used for rentals. Those complexes were later put on the market
and are still used today.
Almost everyone I knew that had room, were hosting friends and
relatives. I know my place was full.

We could make snow where we needed it in town, and the conditions were
good at Nakiska.
I do recall Juan Samaranch mentioning in one of his speeches Calgary
is the only City that could hold the summer and winter Olympics at the
same time.
I also recall an American network reporter standing on Signal Hill the
week before the games started suggesting the bitter cold and high
winds might cause cancellation of some of the events. A few days later
a Chinook rolled in and the games were held in almost summer like
conditions. Well not that warm but certainly very comfortable.

Yes. In two words, in fact:

C'mon. Don't tell me you're not a fan of biathlon. I mean, it's got
guns 'n all. Hell, I don't even know what snow looks like, but any
sport that gets your adrenalin going, then makes you focus on a target
with your heart beating bonkers has got to be tough.
Hey biathalons can kill you dead without the guns...hypothemia baby

Hey, what are YOU doing here? You should be outside shoveling snow,
I read there was a big dump there lately (and I thought it was supposed
to be spring Down Under).

It only snows on the hill (Mt. Egmont) around here. If I want to play in
snow I have to make the effort to go there. |
