Hi, I am hunting for a book I read and loved when I was a child -
unfortunately it was lost in a move, and I can't recall the title,
author, or publisher of the book. Here's what I know (or think I
know):

1. This book most likely was purchased from the Timberdoodle Company
(a company for home schooling kids, I was home schooled, and if I
recall correctly, every purchase they would give out a free book, I
think this was one of those).

2. All I remember it being about was a boy, who befriends an old man,
and he teaches him about surviving solely on the wilderness, making
fire without matches, eating off of the wilderness and with no modern
conveniences, making everything out of the wilds to live. This boy has
a bit of a rival, another boy that is a bully. Well, the old man's dog
(either a Collie or a Border Collie) has puppies and the hero of our
story, the nice boy, wants the nicest pup, but so does the mean boy,
so the old man sets up a competition. Whoever lives the best out in
the wilderness gets the puppy. The rude boy gets it; but it is found
out that he cheated and went home to eat milk, etc., rather than
roughing and toughing it like the nice boy, who, for example, was
trapping frogs and eating frog legs, among other things. So the nice
boy eventually gets the puppy. Throughout the book he learns much from
the old man, who is a mite stern.

3. It was probably published sometime in the 90s, as the latest I
could have read it was in 99 and it looked like a recently published
book at the time.

4. I remember the cover having a picture of a dog or dogs on it, very
vaguely, but don't quote me! All I can confirm is what the story is
about in 2. The title might have had the word "wolf" in it somewhere,
but I don't think so.

I am racking my brain to find this! I can't find it online and
Timberdoodle does not appear to sell it anymore. Please help! I would
love to buy this book again.
