That doesn't count. They know they'll just lose in a penalty shoot-out
in the Finals, so the very fact of qualifying hurts.

Er, England won the Ashes and are losing the one-day knockabouts.

That's like complaining after winning the US Open and then losing in
the first round of the Linz Open ...

Repent, Harlequin!

Samuel Delany fan? :)

Very appropriate quotation, as Harlequins seem to have an awful lot to
repent about at present.

It was harsh, lets be honest. Eduardo dives in football to earn
arsenal a penalty, and gets a two game ban. And Dean Richards gets
three years, for something that didn't even come off!
We have been totally victimised, bloodgate shouldn't even be that big
a deal.

Ticktockman was one of Ellison's stories, but yes, I also admired some
of Delany's works. Have a friend who read Dhalgren multiple times,
though once was enough for me. Delany may have even been at his best
when he stepped away from fiction; I recall his book The Jewel-Hinged
Jaw as very compelling.

Ermmmm.. Thats Harlan Ellison, John, though Samuel certainly could/
can write as well. "Repent Harlequin! Said the Ticktockman" is for my
money, the best science fiction short I've ever read -- and I read a
lot of SF.

Ticktockman was one of Ellison's stories,

I should know better than to rely on my increasingly fallible memory.

Of the so-called 1960s "New Wave", Roger Zelazny is far and away my

favourite.

I thought it was brilliant. Does that tend to support or to refute your
theory? Smile

Refutes it somewhat... Because I thought it was just about the best
SF book I've ever read... (I also liked "Mote in God's Eye" as well
-- for very different reasons.)
