How far is your vehicle from your tent?

On the intended trip about 600 miles.

James

Pretty long hike. Maybe you could get a bicycle lock and lock a container
in a tree.
Tom

Or put your stuff in a portable potty and leave it next to your tent. Put

some crumpled toilet paper on top and nobody should touch it.

And prey no-one has a pee or crap on it!

Of course, that then brings up the question as to whether anyone would give
something a second glance if it weren't locked to a tree. Personally, I'd
rather do a good job of hiding something than locking it up conspicuously -
most people will simply steal whatever strongbox you have and set about it
at their leisure.

Agreed, but the OP asked about a safe.

Does anyone know of a safe that can be used while camping?

I'm thinking of a container which emits a loud alarm if moved or
tampered with in any way. This could be useful but I cannot find
anyone who sells such a thing. It should be very lightweight and
depend on the audible alarm for security.

It's as something in which to store camera, camcorder and the like
while away from the tent. The tent will be in a populated area so an
audible alarm should be a suitable deterrent.

Failing that is there another option? If all else fails I'll just have
to carry valuables in a rucsac but it would be handy not to have to
keep them with me all the time.

James

I think your solution is one of those secure steel net things that
cover your entire rucsac and then secure with a padlock preventing
anyone from gaining access to the contents. With an additional steel
cable you could attach the whole thing to a tree or steel railings.

Couple this with one of those alarmed padlocks which can be used
conventionally or with an integral alarm which emits low level warning
pips when disturbed or moved and then resets after about 20 seconds,
but sounds a loud alarm if disturbed again within the 20 second
period.

I cannot recall what the steel net things are called, unless it is a
PacSafe, or what they cost, but a local shop was selling one of the
alarmed padlocks for GBP10 a few weeks ago - wish I'd bought it
myself!

"KGB" also recommended a Pacsafe product. Just to follow up, I ordered
a couple of them. Only the small one arrived before my holiday. It
looks like it will do the job. I'll have to get the padlock another
time.
