Hi Group:

Please don't reply by e-mail, I rarely check that account, its just a
spam dump.

Last week I got a new puppy - she is an Australian Shepherd / Poodle
mix. As of today she is 7 weeks old, tomorrow she sees the Vet for
the first time.

We have a crate, and intend to crate train her - but I understand she
is too young to start leaving her in the crate for long. We may need
to start using it for her to sleep in - but we still need to let her
out about every two hours.

Other than bonding with her and playing with her and making her
comfortable - and the all important getting her used to being groomed
/ bathed / clipped without too much fuss... I need instructions on
proper training.

Does anyone have strong recommendations on books / videos for puppy
through dog training? Eventually I intend to enroll her in a class,
but for now I'm concentrating on housebreaking and not tearing up the
place...

Best,

Wolfgang

The class if often more to train the owners on these very issues
rather than teaching the dog so much, so I'd suggest maybe ratcheting
that up on the priority level as a great place to network with other
folks and to learn how to be a good master. As the place I trained at
says "We don't train dogs--we train trainers."

That said, I like the Monks of New Skete's books, and The Art Of
Raising A Puppy I found to be very well done.

Making the crate comforting and cave like is important, and positively
introducing it, and if you're dog's at all a chewer, don't make teh
mistake my neighbor just did and give him a pillow to sleep on, chew,
ingest the filling, and spend a few hundred bucks and a lot of worry
at the vet hoping the filling passes ok. The books go into much
better detail and reasoning than I can, but as you seem to already
sense, if you don't educate yourself, crate training can go very badly
for all involved. You are quite correct that young dogs can't hold it
much at all let alone very long, and that if left too long, you only
have yourself to blame for a mess in the crate and not the dog. It's
also useful for a new dog owner to know that you shouldn't train a
puppy the same way you can train a dog who's old enough to be held
responsible for its actions, no more than you can chew out a 6 month
old human for not coming when called, or for wetting their diaper.

Note also this group has received hardly any on topic traffic lately,
and seems to be populated with some colorful individuals who are
probably very consumed with care of dogs because their human
interactions don't go so well. Hopefully this thread stays
constructive for ya!

Enjoy your new family member!
