I understand that laundering a Gor-Tex lined parka or sleeping bag can risk
the integrity of the moisture barrier if not done carefully.
What is the proper procedure to follow, soaps, etc. to use, or (if they
exist) services to use?
Thanks,
Dave |

The nik-wax brand of gore-tex soap and a front-loading washer are what I've
used for years with no problems.

Those specific washes are terribly expensive and I'm not sure quite
what they accomplish for the price.
I remember some of my washing instructions used to recommend a "mild
powdered detergent". I wasn't sure where to find anything like that,
as most of the commonly available detergents from Proctor & Gamble,
Unilever, etc tended to be on the harsh side. About the only thing
that matched that description was Woolite powder, which I can't find
any more.
Gore-Tex (expanded PTFE) itself doesn't suffer from being exposed to
harsh detergents. Neither does the typical nylon fabric that the Gore-
Tex (or similar membrane) is bonded to. It's the DWR that gets
stripped when washed with a strong detergent. That can always be
reapplied, although I've had varying luck using different products.
Once I tried making my own wash by taking Ivory bar soap to a cheese
grater. It washed pretty well, but it didn't necessarily rinse well
in the cold water rinse cycle of most washing machines. Sometimes I'd
just do a second rinse (which is an option in some washers). |
