Finding UK buyers for antique chairs...

Some friends have a set of English pub chairs they'd like to sell. Not
having any luck locally (San Francisco Bay Area). They saw a chair
identical to theirs in a museum somewhere in England, forget exactly
where; they're wondering if it might be possible to sell theirs to such
a museum, or to a private collector there. (Yes, I know, shipping would
be a bear.)

So my question to folks over there is whether there are any antique
collector societies or similar organizations that might be worthwhile
contacting. Any help would be appreciated.

I remember you asking about those chairs, earlier this year
and had even thought of asking how your friends did with them.

I'd think, with the size of the Bay Area, they should be easy to sell
if priced right. How have they tried selling, and what's been
their asking price(s).

The problem with shipping them to the UK, is that the buyer can
either find them cheaply locally OR will mentally deduct the
shipping cost from the sales price....thus giving your friends even
less than if they'd sold them in the Bay Area.

Here's a UK webpage, where such chairs start at 20pounds
each (about what, $26 dollars in the US?) .... and they have
about 200 various chairs. I don't think you could ship *one*
to the UK for what someone there can buy four or five for.

If that's the style your friends have, it's not been a popular
style in the US for years.....and are considered more "Early
American" 1950s-1960s stuff.

I found more on the 'net - at least for price comparison:

4 in Oregon, for $550 the set:

"Delightful set of four 1860 English pub chairs with
wonderful blackened patina, turned legs and back rails. "

They're not like those, which are what I'd call "captain's chairs".

These are chairs intended for pub usage, with a "handle" built into the
back of the chair making it easy to swing them up onto the table at
closing time.

They're what I'd characterize as more hand-made-looking than most
chairs, giving them a charming look and feel. Very comfortable, too.

Several Google searches didn't yield anything that looks like these
chairs. Apparently there are lots of different style chairs that are
called "pub chairs" (makes sense, I guess: any chair that one might find
in a bar).

I'll have to get some pictures and post them.

I did watch a bit of it. Kinda got disinterested, though,
in the old car and baseball ;)
