anyone got any tips for attaching a cricket ball to a rope?

I've tried a few methods but they all fail - mainly the rope unwinds/
unknots itself.

This is for practising driving, and not for knocking in a bat, btw.

cheers Smile

Have you tried plaited rope?

Put it in a sock and tie the sock to string.

I bought one of these for my son last Christmas:

http://www.cricketexpress.co.nz/images/products0708/coaching%20aids/coa_CW-Leather.gif

It works really well hanging from a tree branch; he doesn't use it much, but
I do. It appears to have a small hole drilled the whole way through the
centre of the ball through which the rope (more like strong nylon twine) is
fed, then a simple knot tied in the end.

Perhaps I could put HIM in a sock and hit it?

thanks for the suggestions.

I won't go with the 'ball in a sock' idea, as I think it's better to
train my eyes/mind to see a REAL ball. One of the things I like to do
is watch the seam all the way onto the bat and ask myself "what was
the seam's position on impact?".

I'm a bit afraid the 'push rope through ball and tie a knot' will
fail. I'll try it, though, if my current method keeps failing.

At the moment I've drilled a hole half-way through the ball, push the
rope into it, and then insert a screw. The screw is counter-sunk so
that a miss-hit doesn't damage the bat face. The problem is a well-
timed-and-firmer-than-usual hit rips the rope out, whilst leaving the
screw in (plus the ball ends up either in the pool or over the fence).
TBH I'm a bit surprised the screw grips to the inner cork, but it
does.

My next evolution will have 2 strings, hoping to control the path a
bit better. An edge can send the ball in a 1 string setup all over the
place.

How long until it turns into a full-blown bowling machine?

Much better if you drill a hole in him and hit without the cushioning effect
of the nylon.

30 years back when I wanted to be next Gavaskar I used to put the ball in
a cloth and tie that cloth to a rope and used to
practice my shots and movements. Try that old trick may still work. It
produced very good results for me, and incurs no expenses, I was poorer
back then Smile
VJ-

And were you the next Gavaskar?
Even better than him but only in my mind and dreams Sad
