Was King John of England really such an evil man? He was no friend of
the church, and history in medieval times tended to be written by
monks. He lost the Duchy of Normandy to the French king, but did he
really botch up the defense while he dalllied with his new wife, the
hot-blooded Isabelle? His barons coerced him into signing the famous
Magan Carta, but was that really a power grab on the part of a greedy
aristocracy? It's hard to figure out all of this almost a thousand
years later -- it's a good issue fo a fictional treatment, I think.
