I read the book Herding the Moo about a person's experiences with the
notorious martial arts cult of Chung Moo Quan headed by one John C.
Kim (aka Park). The person goes into vivid detail describing how
people were lured into the cult, gradually indoctrinated and would
eventually orient their lives around the cult at the expense of their
families, friends, jobs, some actually winding up in jail. I have
heard of other martial arts cults or schools practicing cult-like
recruitment and teaching methods (i.e. not letting students see what
they are getting into, insisting students sign long-term non-
refundable contracts, not taking part in or discouraging their
students from taking part in martial arts tournaments, and worse case
instances of physical and sexual abuse).

Have any of you heard of or been involved in a martial arts cult?

No.

The only strange recruitment condition that I know off except for a
Krav Maga school that asks for a proof that you do not have any recent
convictions (something that I can understand potential employers
asking, but not a sports club).

I can understand that. With so many hungry lawyers it is wise to cover
your
ass.

Then again, if you are going to teach peopel to be D34DLY you better
take care who you instruct.

Yup I had an instructor who said he would teach a criminal how to be a
better criminal.

It is a martial arts class though, not bible school.

Also over here you do not have the same lawsuit-happy culture as in
the US.

Count your blessings.

If someone punches another guy and that guy dies, there is no

way a judge would ever blaim a M/A club.

It would be like a convicted felon running over some old lady and
blaiming his driving instructor.

Same rationale here - it is just they sue anyway hoping for a large
settlement from the insurance company cause the court suit is so expensive.- Tekst uit oorspronkelijk bericht niet weergeven -

In Europe (at least mainland) the settlement values are not of the
same order than in the US; judges are likely to reward you with
compensation for actual, proveable damages, and are not eager to
reward people with huge compensation claims for psychological damage
etc.

So starting a lawsuit, even if you would win, is usually not really a
good idea except when you can really prove the financial impact of the
damages you have suffered.

If you find a mouse in your big mac you can start a lawsuit, but it
will result in McD getting fined, not in you getting any compensation
(unless you managed to suffer actual medical damages as a consequence
of that mouse). In the US you could probably claim a substantial
amount for yourself due to psychological damages etc.
