From everything I read, they're all either gangsters or
capitalist/yuppies, while the average Russians are still the modern
equivalent to peasants.  I've met about a dozen Russians in the last 20
years or so through school or skydiving, and only met one I didn't like..

Me too. He was an MKVD Colonel.

And to top it off, the prick wasn't a skydiver, either.

nope....even though I was called one when the first 4 year hash mark
went on my sleve. Back then being a lifer was like admitting you
couldn't make it on the outside. Kind of enjoyed the power that comes
with rank though WinkP

Well being a rigger instead of a real sodjer, I didn't have any power
with my E-5, just a little more money and better dependent bennies.
Plus - everybody below E-7 got Spec 4,5, or 6 instead of stripes.  I
finally got the stripes when I joined the GA National Guard in an
Artillery unit, as a TacFire specialist.

After getting off to a rough start, 6 straight months of K.P. and
having to make E-3 twice for getting thrown in the Mexican jail
causing me to be late getting back to the ship, I was a First Class
Petty Officer (E-6) by the age of 21....That Specialist shit the Army
had in the 1960's...I was told a Corporal in the Infantry was senior
to all of them- - -I'm still scratching my head over some of that Army
shit. Their were
Sgt's walking around who had been Captains and Majors but they got
"riffed" or something. In the Navy, you had to have time in grade and
take a written test and have a certain rifle score to be a NCO. The
Army? Shit just show up and get promoted, same way with getting
demoted...Busting sailors down was harder. Shit
it took at least a Summary Court Marshal to break a CPO. The Army
wasn't allowed to demote us at all.....Man did I work that angle in
Europe, its a wonder the Battalion Commander wasn't saluting
me!....Our cultures were so different. I took to the Armys right
away....They had to check with the Navy because I'd just tell them a
sea story and of course the Navy asked....."YOU GIVING OUR MAN
TROUBLE?"

The only problem with that, IS they will "admit" it. Them boys have
been over ther for three and four tours.,, The eight -duce is the
same. Them and the legs are just trading places,,, The country is in
a tough spot. We need a couple more airborne divisions.

Do they even jump out of Airplanes anymore or are they totally Air

Shit the Navy can even do that...I hopped in and out of a lot of
Helicopters in Vietnam. Cuts down on walking or swimming while you are
lugging a combat load and any one thats been in the service knows that
sucks.....So now every body except their demo team is basically a leg

WELL,, you got a point,.,, BUT

The last time I was in a airplane with a bunch of them, I was harasing
their leg asses, and saying,,, "Hows the screaming chickens doing"?

a second of quiet, and one from the back very loudly screamed,,,
"WERE'RE SCREAMING"

We need two more divisions of airborne and air assualt. Fuck the
generals and politicians,, I have spoken.

I totally agree with re-instituting the draft for some type of national
service. Old farts like us knew that we would get drafted unless we
were 4F or got a school deferment, and more of the people we knew were
vets than not. People under 45? hardly any vets - they are a rarity
now, and I see a lot or younger people taking their country and freedom
for granted. Holy shit! I just did an old fart rant! I *AM* getting old!

Yep, they have been cheated.....At least with the draft they stood
some chance of receiving discipline training that can be used through
out life and being challenged.
I went in during peace time and got out after a in country Vietnam
tour after finding 99 % of US Combat is not about defending your
country but defending its interests.
Not worth killing for IMHO. The thing is even if you were drafted you
did a hitch.....didn't like it? Get out! I stayed 10 years...There
were many options, you didn't want to get drafted into the Army run
down and join the Navy...The guys that
joined the USMC to stay out of the Army exemplify some strange
thinking to me.
Having worked around both, I liked the Army better than the Marines.
In Europe
I shot on a Army range....fired 40 rounds and hit the target 42
times....Hell I'll shoot
with the Army anytime Wink Specially if the range is loaded down with
cooks and clerks heh heh.....All the Jar heads ever did was bitch eat
and squawk when they were aboard and oh yeah vomit in the well deck of
my LCVPR. We carried a Army Intel team on our 1961 S.E. Asia beach
survey....I didn't ride them in but the other coxun said they didn't
toss their cookies and they were old guys (Majors and M/Sgt's),
Chinese language experts------>don't ask, its quite a sea story as
what we were up to. But Congress really did the following generations
a disservice doing away with the draft------Look how useless and self
serving Jerry K and a few of the other young snots are tsk tsk tsk ;->

Don

I have a friend over in Columbus Ga a retired CSM of the
RTB...Hardcore RANGER/AIRBORNE type lifer and he claims the draftee's
made pretty good
soldiers all in all....I can believe that. Draftee or Volunteer you
stepped up and swore the same oath, got your ass sent to boot camp
then further training.
I think we all probably loved our country equally----funny thing is
you ended up out there not fighting for your country so much as to
stay alive and for each other.
Even in peace time everybody seemed to want to pull their
load...."peer pressure" and not wanting to let the guys with you down
was the driving factor I suppose. Oh sure their were a few sad
sacks....I was lucky...the part of the Navy I was in
usually cut or dropped them in one or another of the training phases
on what was called a Administrative drop and they got sent off to shit
duty somewhere. I'm thinking quite a few draftee's must have went on
to become lifers and ended up running the Army Don heh heh....Congress
screwed a lot of American kids by dropping the draft IMHO No world
travel on Uncle Sam's nickle, no chance to meet then overcome
challenges, suffer hardships then go on to become real men....lookit
all of the little girly boys in the USPA wanting to be somebody and
thats just the tip of the spear. 0~;->
