Well off of it over the backyard actually--more barn swallows that I
remember seeing so far this year. Shortage of mosquitoes (and allies)
can not possibly be the problem. Don't remember seeing many dragon
flies either--by this time of year at this time of day with T-storms and
humidity and all seems like there should be huge bunches of them.
And there have not been many glow-bugs--and I think they have peaked
already.
Whole lotta Goldfinches.
Still researching the beak color issue--best I've is somebody's report
that they start with a black (or dark) layer that wears off to expose
the orange.
Bird Chick[1] has an interesting article up about the colors "red"
finches come in.
