I didn't see it up in the discussion board so I was skeptical that
Saki or one of the moderators really did get it, so here it is:
This is video footage and stories from the Beatles on the road around
1966. Some interesting points that I noted:
1.) In Brian Epstein's hotel suite after the "Jesus" comment, Tony
Barrow reported that John was so upset, he put his head in his hands
and sobbed.
This was reported in one of the Lennon bios I read long ago. I get
mixed up as to which book, but I think it was the Coleman book.
According to this book, John was truly upset that his remarks caused
such a commotion. He was also concerned about his bandmates. He was
afraid he did something to hurt them.
I have a wonderful Time/Life picture book about John. I forget the
title right now, but it has many photos and short essays. IIRC there
is a photo there of John sitting slumped in a chair, no glasses,
looking very downcast. This was taken during the Jesus controversy.
He really appears to be on the verge of tears.
Long ago I also heard an interview of John on the internet. This was
taken years after the Jesus remark. I forget the year of the
interview . . . . probably post Beatles. Anyway, in this interview
John says that he was actually frightened. |

2.) The music promoter didn't want to spend excessive amounts of money
for a covering in case of severe weather, so they gave the roadie--Ed
Freeman, I think he said his name was- a power chord wrapped in a
towel and told him that simple electric shocks were ok while
performing, but if one of them fell down, he was supposed to pull the
plug.
3.) They would take a half-smoke cigarette from one of the girls in
the front row, take a puff and then hand it back:

If this is the same move that I saw long ago, there were many
interesting things. One point that was made during that movie by one
of the insiders is that after the Beatles returned from touring the US
in 1965 (or 1966) it appeared that things had changed between Paul and
John . . . . there was a frostiness between them. |

This is very good! It's an excellent telling of the story I've already
heard plenty of times, but it's cool to hear the roadies and other
peripherals talk about it, rather than the usual suspects. |
