I'm trying to find the author or title of a short story that was
published in a high school American Lit book circa 1970, and hope
someone here might be able to help.
The story is about a high school boy trying to get enough money to buy
a varsity sweater so that the popular girl in school will be his
girlfriend. A platonic female friend helps him raise the money by
finding and selling local wildflowers, roots, etc.
It turns out that the popular girl was only interested in him because
he had the most sports stripes on his sweater. He then gives the
sweater to the platonic female friend who has liked him all along.
Can anyone identify this?
