Some time ago I asked what old guns you would like to see available
again, and I suggested the WW 2 German Stg-44, the first operational
assault rifle. Now someone is doing it:

Kind of pricey, but something like this is not likely to be a high-
production item. I seem to recall that new ammuniton is available, and
of course the parent case for the 8x33 mm kurz is the basic 8 mm
Mauser/30-06.

If someone is going to go to that trouble why don't they tweak it for a
more standard ammo, eg 7.62x39 ?

I suspect anyone that can afford $5000 for the rifle won't worry
overly about the cost of an unusual cartridge.

The 7.92 mm Kurz has an overall length of 1.88 inches. I don't know
how close this is to the maximum length that can be accommodated by
the Stg-44 or it's magazine, but the 22 Remington Bench Rest cartridge
is only slightly longer at 2.00 inches and takes the same size bolt
face, similarly the 6mm BR with light bullets. The 221 Remington
Fireball is slightly shorter than the 7.92 Kurz and would work well
with the Stg-44's 16 inch barrel. The 7x33 Sako would also fit, but
it's probably easier to find or make 7.92 Kurz. You could also make a
variety of wildcats with the same length case necked to 6 mm, 6.5 mm,
7 mm or whatever. I have no idea what the design pressure limit is for
the Stg-44, so the narrower 221 case might be better to keep the bolt
thrust within safe limits.
